Not a pleasant topic but is anyone concerned about recent events in Europe and safety?

We were originally going to go to England this summer but we changed our mind not because of the terrorist attacks but because my dh is Indian and there's been after Brexit a lot of open anti immigrant sentiment in England. I was worried about the safety of my dh and kids who don't look white like I do.

Just to be clear, I don't at all "like" what you posted, as it is a sad but true statement about racism being alive and well. I do, however, appreciate that you posted your perspective. The answer to the very basic question "am I safe here" - wherever "here" is - very likely depends on whether you are female, brown, queer, visibly disabled, etc.

And to respond to a prior post from someone else - a terrorist is defined as someone who uses violence to incite fear, usually for political reasons. Many terrorists are lone wolf actors not affiliated with an organized group, though they may share a political belief or ideology. The Oklahoma bombing was a terrorist attack. The Pulse nightclub shooting was a terrorist attack. The attack in Manchester was a terrorist attack.

He admits that he was not following his own advice: Always wear a moneybelt under your clothes.

Thanks for posting the link. I know I had read something about it. I don't wear a money belt but I did alter a neck wallet so it hangs on my shoulder and lies flat along my side under my arm beneath my shirt. I love it because it also remains hidden under sleeveless blouses and tanks. We usually end up carrying quite a bit of cash at times since we do mostly private tours.

You are aware, are you not, that being Muslim is not the same thing as being Indian?
You are aware that she asked if her husband would stick out not being white. If you read my next post you would see I pointed out that it's very multicultural. I don't know the number of Indians, but that wasnt my point.

I never said racism doesn't exist. It exists against all people including those of us that are white. I just don't think that's the driving force behind anti imigration. I personally feel that is more to do with economics and some other factors that I won't mention. That's just my opinion.

It's *your* responsibility to back up your statements with cites when requested, not the responsibility of the one asking you to provide them.
Is that a new disboards rule that I have to link an article if someone asks? I don't link articles and I rarely open links. I'm perfectly capable of researching a topic on my own.

I did cancel our British Isle cruise. Ironically we chose this cruise because it seemed like a "safe" itinerary. However I feel London is being targeted by extremists right now. Sad but world events are altering our travel plans.

I hate to say it, but have you read this? http://vifreepress.com/2016/10/fbi-says-virgin-islands-highest-murder-rate-country/ You might want to cancel your Eastern too.

Baja ain't all that either: https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/mexico-travel-warning.html

Standard practice when making such definitive statements, when pressed for cites, is to give those cites, not say, "Use Google." If you're going to make a potentially incendiary statement be prepared to back it up with facts. If you can't or won't, don't make those statements to start out with. It's that whole "leg to stand on" thing. I could just as readily say, "All people who use the number 21 in their username have a fluffy rabbit tail." If somebody says, "Prove it" then it's my responsibility to do so, not their responsibility to find the information.
It wasn't incendiary at all. Someone else already linked an article about terrorists attacks against christians. I thought this was pretty common knowledge depending on where you get your news. Since religion is not allowed and it's a slippery slope to start with I'm not going to debate it When my kids ask questions about something I tell them to google it. I'll just leave it at that.

That looks suspiciously like an anti-Islam site. They don't appear to be interested in being an unbiased source. Every claim they make about Islam could be turned around to be made about Christianity.

Lots of indiscriminate killing all over the world.

I'm inclined to say that terrorists, like war criminals, do the awful things they do because of who they are as people. Not because of their beliefs, culture, or childhood. But because they are awful, hateful human beings. A religion does not make you that way. Those people are in all churches, all communities, in every society.

(Erased most of post because realized I was probably violating a rule, but your linked source is full of you know what imo.)
I'm glad you edited it because that was pretty offensive.

A list of places and people killed by people who take credit in the name of a religion is what it is. I guarantee there is not a similarly lengthy list of killings committed by Christians since 2001 in the name of their religion.

But this isn't the place for more of why I think you've got your head in the sand.

I live within an hour of Baltimore City, MD which probably has higher murder statistics than what you've just posted. But yes, I still go to the Baltimore Orioles baseball games.

Your not comparing apples to apples and it's not worth my time to debate you. I'm simply answering the OP's question, whether you like it or not.

Why make 2001 the cut off? But if we must, Dylan Roof would be a good place to start.

And:

2001 is the start of the list I provided--apples to apples. Let's focus on this century's problems. Relativism gets us nowhere when we have to travel back hundreds of years to get to a comparison. Or are you arguing that the Crusades are ongoing?

Dylan Roof is a racist, but he did not kill in the name of Christianity.

(As an aside, I don't understand why people don't believe terrorists who clearly and vehemently ascribe their killing to their religion.)

To get back on topic, no, I am not changing my travel plans. I will be heading to Europe next summer regardless of attempts by terrorists to disrupt civilization.

Actually that's not what the poster asked at all. But you definitely took it there.
