Just received a notice in the mail today from the regulating district that my beach access permit (up at the lake) will now cost me at least 5 TIMES what it did last year !!!!!!!

And I thought it was bad when they nailed me last spring for $25 for a new sign that I didn't need!

Also found out that if I turned the title of our lake house and beach over to my granddaughter (something I've been considering for awhile now) it would cost my DD & her DH SIX times last years fee in order to retain the beach permit...

Grrrrrrrrrr...

I would be bummed too!! Any explanation for the huge hike in fees?

YIKES, C.Ann. Is the beach access permit worth that much money to you?

It's not worth it to me - in terms of how often I really use my beach - but if I don't maintain the beach permit, my lake house would be worth a big fat ZERO... Places without beach can be had for $50,000 or so (although they usually just sit there empty because no one wants them)- whereas places WITH the beach permits go for double, triple, and quadruple that..

Also, my DD, her DH, & my granddaughter get a LOT of use out of it (they have the works - boat with sleeping quarters; two jet skis; brand new dock my son-in-law built 2 years ago; etc.) so I wouldn't even consider letting the beach permit go.. However, I think I'm going to have to ask them to chip in on this new expense.. It's hard enough trying to maintain two houses on our small income and unexpected increases like this really throw a monkey wrench in the works.. :( I don't think they'll have a problem with that - because they know the property will eventually go to their daughter anyhow - but it just stinks that we're being hit with such a huge increase with such little notice..

According to the letter I received, the reason for the increase is "a drastic increase in operating costs".. Hmmmm.. A pretty "vague" explanation if you ask me.. However, they know full well that for everyone who doesn't want to see their lake property plummet to zero in value, they'll have no choice but to cough up the cash..

Another case of being stuck bewteen a rock and a hard place, I guess..
:(

That really stinks C.Ann. I would be very upset too. Is there anything you can do about it? I doesn't seem very fair to raise it that much at once, and they do kind of have you, because I don't see alot of people giving up thier beaches.

What does that mean?

There's going to be a public hearing up there - in the latter part of October - and even though I've usually closed up the place by then I think I may keep it open so I can go to the meeting at 7:30 in the evening and then stay overnight..

That's another nasty little trick they pulled.. They made NO mention of this when all of the summer residents were there but now that they've all returned to their year-round homes in Florida, Conn., New Jersey, Colorado, etc. they're going to have a "public meeting" where the residents can voice their concerns.. Not the first time they pulled something like this after all the residents had gone home for the season.. Seems to be a pattern with them..

There will probably only be a handful of us present at the "public" meeting, but as least I'll have a chance to "vent" my frustrations and disappointment over this nonsense..

Oh, thats worse! I would be so angry! I wonder if there is some kind of legal action all of you could take. Maybe contact a state rep or congressman? It really isn't fair to do that to people.
