I went to the most wonderful and heartbreaking wedding today, and I just had to share.

A little background. . . My friend, Molly was due to get married in May but her dad, Bob, has been battling brain cancer. These are very close family friends. I spent as much time at their house as I did mine while growing up. The four daughters were the closest thing I had to sisters. Bob was doing well and then all of a sudden took a turn. Molly called on Wednesday night and told us that she was getting married this Saturday (today), either at her church or at the hospital chapel, depending on how her dad was doing.

This morning’s word was that the wedding would be at the church. We drove 3 hours to attend this wedding that was pulled together in 3 days. The church was decorated thanks to the Matron of Honor and both families and close friends managed to all make it on such short notice. When Molly walked in next to her dad with her mom pushing the wheelchair, I couldn’t hold back the tears. Bob managed to remember his line while giving away the bride. The wedding was simple, elegant and very special. The pastor who married them was the pastor who had been at our church while we were growing up and he has remained a close family friend. He too dropped everything to drive 4 hours to marry them.

After the wedding, the pastor asked us all to remain seated because Molly was going to dance with her dad right there in church, before he had to go back to the hospital. She held him up and danced with him while her new husband helped with a hand on Bob’s back. There was not a dry eye in the house. Even the photographer was crying. It is a moment that I will never forget. I am so glad that she had this time with him. It was short, and he was fading by the end but she had this day. If you can keep this family in your prayers, I’d appreciate it.

That is so touching! It also brought me to tears. I wish him the best and her new journey in life as well.

What a heartbreaking story :sad1: . I hope her dad is able to pull through.

I know from experience that having her dad there will mean everything in the world to her later and bring her no short amount of comfort and happiness. I had planned to get married the summer after I graduated from college but my mom was given less then two months. When there came a point where she was able to be taken to the church where we would be married, we also just jumped right in and got married. We had a bit longer to pull plans together (a bit over a week is what it took us to do) but it was wonderful beyond wonderful just having her share our special day. She insisted on walking down the aisle herself (with lots of help) (however she didn't make it back up the aisle under her own steam...but we have pictures of her being helped down and those are very precious!! Our wedding took place the week after the start of my senior year of college. My mom ended up making it for another YEAR and a HALF (sometimes doctors are stumped and miracles happen). While we were given that extra time with my mom that we hadn't expected, I always look back fondly on the memory of her being there with us on our wedding day and I have never for a moment wished we had not made the choice we did.

Losing a parent is never an easy thing to go through. I will be praying for your friend, her dad and the entire family.

Yes, it is a sad shadow to start a "new chapter of your life" under but it will make for one of the best memories ever WAY down the road.

Many prayers are going up for all.

What a blessing that her Dad could share this day.

My Dad was also battling Cancer on my Wedding Day and passed away 12 weeks later...I look back on the pictures and it touches my heart so that he was able to be there though it is obvious he was unwell.

We get brief moments in time that last a lifetime and this will be one for all who were witness to her day. Hope there's a miracle with his name on it!:grouphug:

I have tears in my eyes now too! Wht a special memory for her, I am glad they were able to share this day!

Sweet and touching story. They are in my prayers.
