I have a call in to my vet, they're going to call me back (hopefully soon) and let me know if I need to bring my dog in right away. Meanwhile I thought I'd ask here.

My dog (10 years old) has been having on and off nose bleeds all morning. I've had several dogs in my life and I've never had this happen before. Is this comon? Can it be serious? Anything I can do while I'm waiting for the vet to get back to me?

sorry you probably don't want to hear this but our dog started to have nose bleeds when he was diagnosed with cancer (lymphoma). But please don't panick if he's acting fine in all other ways it just might be an allergy or something that has dried up his nose. Not sure on how to stop the nose bleeds either. Sending you pixie dust that he'll be ok.

I house sat a dog years ago that developed that problem while i was sitting. I don't remember what the actual diagnosis was but I had to give him B-12 shots for the 2 weeks I had him. I don't remember how long he had to have them but it wasn't longterm and he lived another 7 or so years after that.
Hope your vet calls back soon!

Thanks! The vet finaly called back (it's a very busy office) and said they want to see her either tonight after work or tomorrow morning, so we've got an appointment for 6:30 tonight. Thanks again everyone! Hopefully I can keep her in the kitchen if it happens again...boy has it been a messy morning!

Our neighbors Lab developed nose bleeds, and yes, it was cancer. She's been going for a long time with it however, but it is messy and it just has to slowly take it's course, I guess.

my lovely girl had a nosebleed and vet said lawn allergies. It got worse but he said the same. Then 6 months later, she falls from weakness and is bloated, vet says pinched nerve. Emergency vet suggests an ultrasound and biopsy but regular vet poo-poos it. After third fainting, I took her to UC Davis. hemangiosarcoma. Lethal. One of the symptoms: nosebleed. She has only a small time on this earth. I am not ready to have her die. I will miss her terribly. Everyone, after your doggie is 8 years old, please get an (annual) ultrasound of the abdomen and a biopsy. These small things cannot hurt, and may save you from agony over what you could have done but did not.

I hope everythings OK I would hate having my Sweety Pie Diaignosed with cancer if that is what it is oh yeah and everything happens for a reason so maybe if it does pass maybe that means that it would have bitten someone. Sorry to be such a downer if it is just a dry nose or anything like that but I just wanted to tell you Please report back to us.

I am so glad to read this, even through the tears. I hope for the best for all. and when she passes, it will be because another needs rescuing, and although I will never replace my gal, I will get another dog. And again, I will pick the saddest one at the worst shelter, and we will be happy. 10 years is not enough.

p.s. pink ribbon survivor myself.

thx.

How are the dogs teeth? Could be an infection that had eaten through the nasal cavity. They can fix that. :)

She had surgery, the cancer has taken over her liver and entire body cavity. Removed her cancerous spleen. I am giving her chinese herbs Yunan baio to help with the bleeding, but she is weak. Can only be a miracle to change the inevitable. All this started with a nose bleed that went undiagnosed for one year.

My dog began with nose bleeds about 3 weeks ago. He was taken to the emergency vet and stayed overnight and then we moved him to our own vet.

They first thought it was a tumor but a wonderful poster here who is a vet sent me a PM and suggested looking into tick borne diseases. His sypmptoms fit pretty well and I called my vet first thing the next morning. He hadn't known we had our dog in another part of the state a couple weeks before and he can't use Frontline due to a rash. He has been on Comfortis and I didn't know it doesn't work against ticks. Lots of didn't knows there.

We changed him to the right antibiotic and within 48 hours he was much improved. His blood platelet count was down to 70 thous. when it should have been 300-500 thousand. He had to be transfused.

He is doing fine now and eating well again. He still needs to gain back a little weight. He also had surgery to scope his nose to look for a tumor, just in case. He had a lot of irritation but the biopsy came back clear. He has had a bit of sneezing and snorting due to all the swelling but that is gradually going away.

Give you doctor all the information you can...what flea meds he is on...any changes in eating or eliminating...behaviour changes. They will find the cause.

Best of luck and I will keep you in my thoughts.

I remember your post. I'm glad your doggie is doing much better. I wondered what happened.

She's better, thanks for asking. I took her to the vet, and $300+ and a few blood tests later, they ruled out illness and rat poison (rat poison works by making the rats blood unable to clot and they bleed to death). Everything came back normal. Right now we are in a wait and see mode. If the nose bleed doesn't happen again, we'll leave things alone. If she gets another one, the vet wants to do some xrays to see if there is a physical cause.

I am glad she is better. It is so hard when our pets are sick and we just can't figure out what is wrong with them.
