Northern Sights and Mickey's MAGICal Delights-1st Baltic Cruise-June 12,2010-Pt 2

DH is the techy in our family, so I posed your question to him. He said that, while we have never tried Skype from DCL, others on the Dis have reported that DCL blocks skype and voice over internet type of applications. If this is true, you won't be able to skype from the ship. If it's not true, then you would still need to have a computer that has the Skype application preloaded with a webcam.

DH is going to search and see if he can find the previous postings regarding this topic. But given the circumstances, it might be a good idea to call DCL and find out in advance to make special arrangements, if possible.

Thanks so much. We kinda thought that, so we are going to try to use Internet Cafe's or free WIFI areas in the cities we visit. What does DH think of that plan?

We are in France, as Scott mentioned, we could not get any free wifi in Llondon, so Scott paid for only a few minutes a day, just to check the Internet. We have a sim card, but it has been nothing but problems, Scott says to go with the Verizon International program instead. have a great day all!

Thanks, Scott and Lynn! Our international exploreres

I lost the page that had the list of docks we will be using at the different ports. Can someone help me?

We have iphones and my husband is going to the AT&T store to see if they'll work while on the trip. What should he make sure he finds out when he goes there? Anyone else traveling with iphones?

Tomorrow is packing day:scared1: No more putting it off :rotfl2:

Yes - the iPhones will work just fine. You'll want to turn off data roaming to prevent an outrageous bill - but other than that - they will work fine. I've used mine in Europe many times. You can add on a texting plan and an international voice plan - but they are both limited in what they offer and save you.

oh, dear, what did they say about Yahoo video messaging?

Not sure about that one - I'm guessing it's in the same category. If Skype works, it probably would too.

I was only refering to the Skype being block from the ship's internet connection (if it is at all). In an internet cafe where you use the cafe's computers, I suppose it would work if the computer there has the required software loaded (it would have to have Skype loaded for it to work). If you're using your own laptop at a hotspot, I assume it would work - but I suppose it's possible for the hotspot owner to block that traffic as well. Then there is the potential cost of a hotspot or cafe, of course - could be expensive depending on the rate structure. I've never been to these places, so can't really advise on specific ins and outs.

Ok, I finished my fact sheets, and started e-mailing them to those of you who asked for them. But them Joann was making puzzles to go with them. So now I'm adding the puzzles and activities, and will e-mail again when I've got it all done. Should be soon.

Alright. Now I think I'm finally finished. I've e-mailed a copy to everyone (I think) who asked for one). Please let me know if I missed anyone, or if there's anyone else who would like one. There is a page for each country (at least) of information and pictures, plus a coloring page of each flag, plus a word search, and at the end there are three crosswords that incorporate everything. Our kids are missing the final week or so of school, and we wanted to add a little bit of education for them.

Aaron,

You and Joann did an outstanding job on the fact sheets. Forget how much fun Katie is going to have with the fact sheets I'm going to enjoy them.

Laura is already using your map for the cover of her trip notebook that she puts together before each trip.

This is what I found...Hope it helps.

I found this posted on the July 6th thread:

Here are the locations where we will be docking for the following ports
of call:

Oslo, Norway: Akershus Kaia
Copenhagen, Denmark: Langelinie
Helsinki, Finland: Munkki Saari Quay, West Harbour
Stockholm, Sweden: Frihamnen

I hope this information has been helpful. If you require further
assistance in planning your visit, please feel free to contact us.

We look forward to sailing with you!

Have a Magical Day!

Thanks! I've definitely learned a lot while researching them - it's been fun. I hope I didn't get anything blatantly wrong. It was interesting to add the little box with translations for each language and the pronunciations. I took them mostly from the DCL webpage info on each port of call. Except, that I know a little German and Russian, and decided that some of their pronunciations aren't the way I would say them. So I made up my own. I claim no legal responsibility for the accuracy. If you try to use them and accidentally start in international incident... you're on your own.

Does anyone know if DCL will be stricter with the alcohol, etc. to bring on board the ship than they are in Florida?

We typically bring a case or so of water and maybe a bottle or two of wine to have in the stateroom. Do you think we'll be able to do that for this cruise?

No idea if British/EU/Russian customs would have issues with that policy. We still have yet to receive our documents, so just curious if anyone's docs say anything about it.

Joann

ATTN: All families with kids from 5-10

We would like to get the kids together to meet each other and break the ice over a Mickey bar by the Mickey pool on the starboard side at 3pm on embarkation day.

We anticipate that most folks will have been able to get to their cabins by then and if it's warm enough, I know our girls will want to swim a bit before the pools get too crowded. So we will be hanging out there until 3:45ish when it will be time to go and don the lifejackets for the lifeboat drill.

It's less than two weeks away!!!! Can't wait!:banana::banana:

Not to hog the boards today, but....;)

Update on the DisMeet

DCL has yet to confirm a time and location for our DisMeet. However, I did receive an e-mail that said they should be able to confirm this week. So stay tuned.

We are still planning a Dismeet on the 13th - the first sea day.

A favor: Does anyone have access to a dollar store or Target dollar bin and could pick up some name tags for us to you use for the meet???? I'd do this, but no such thing exists in Uganda...hmmmm:confused3

It will be a great chance to get to know your fellow DISers, have a cocktail, and just relax!

This will also be an excellent time to update the cabin roster if anyone's cabins have changed for FE purposes and Secret Mickey's. So please join us!

See everyone in less than two weeks!!!!!!:dance3:

OMG!! What an awesome job you did on these!
I'm printing a couple of copies for us and to bring extras!
You could have just done these for your FEs and it would have been wonderful!
Thanks so much for all your hard work!

I haven't heard that the cruise line will be any stricter than before, but I do know that the policy on liquor hasn't changed. I am sure cases of bottled water would be acceptable.
