So, I'm thinking of getting a Nook Color for myself, and want to know what you love about yours.

I don't usually spend this much money on myself, so I'm having a hard time letting that much $ go! Though my bosses did get me a gift card for B&N since they knew that I want one, but I still have to spend $200 out of my pocket. Just want to make sure it's worth it before I spend that much!

My DD8 has a Nook Color (I'm an iPad person myself). Her's is "rooted" so that she can use all the apps from the Android Market. She reads books on it checked out from a neighboring counties library (Gwinnett County, GA will give an out of county card for $30/year). She also surfs the web, plays Angry Birds and loves the thing.

I like the size of it but the lack of 3G really is a disadvantage for me.

I have the non color Nook.. and I love it. I was looking at Nook Colors and I'm still unsure. I could always use my non color Nook for either my classroom --my students love it-- or I could give it to my son.

I have had my NookColor for a few months now and really enjoy it. Mine is rooted for now, but we are considering rerooting to the new B&N software. I had a Kindle3 first and liked it, but gave it to mom when she broke her wrist and couldn't hold a book. Then the NookColor came out and I had to have it. I rooted it so I could use my Kindle acct and books with it.

My husband got his NC on ebay directly thru B&N for $200. He unrooted to the new software that B&N just released and he loves it. Much better battery life. I will switch too soon, when someone figures out how I can use my kindle acct on the new upate.

The wifi works great out and about. Surfing is just like a netbook. We are thinking about getting one for our tech geek 11yr old for his birthday. He is an avid reader and would use it. I also use the ePub format with the local library.

I absolutely love my nook color. Took a non-disney vacation this winter, brought along 3 books and bought another one in the airport on the way home.

The ability to carry so many books in such a small device is great. It's bright enough to read in bed and not disturb DH.

I am pleasantly surprised at the "reading experience" on the nookcolor, haven't read a paper book since getting the nc two months ago.

Noticed the PP's daughter can read nc books from the library, I would love something like that. It can get expensive and I despise the bad "lendme" policy; hopefully, either the publishers will allow more lending options or someone will find a way to hack the device.

Mine is rooted, too. Rumor is Barnes & Noble is going to push out an OTA update which will enable the android market which will be great for non-techie users.

Even bought one for my 70 year old mother and she loves it!

Happy to answer any questions you may have.

I see in OSUmouse's post that B&N released the software!

Just may have to unroot this weekend.

The update doesn't give access to the Android Market- Barnes and Moble has its own app store. Only about 140 apps so far but Angry Birds is in there.

If you want the full Android Market - you still have to root.

My husband and I got Nook Colors a few months ago and we love them. The Nook Color does weigh almost one pound, and I thought the weight would bother me holding it for long periods of time, but it doesn't.

Things I like about it: I love the LCD screen, very vibrant. (No problems with eye strain even with reading for long periods.) The brightness and font features can be adjusted to your liking. One of the best, you can change the background color. This comes in handy for reading in the dark. Butter cream (or something like that) and grey are my fave for reading in the dark. Overall I like the style of it. Two main reasons I chose the Nook Color over the Kindle; the Nook Color is color, (obvious :rotfl:), and I didn't like the look of the Kindle with a keyboard on it. I prefered the sleek look of the Nook Color.

My daughter had the nook color and I had a kindle- after she got the nook color I ditched the kindle and upgraded to the color nook too! LOVE the new app store they released last week!

I love it!!! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I even upgraded it to the new updates and it is even more awesome!! I use it all of the time.

The Developer forum has a process out now on manually rooting the new 1.2 firmware. It looks pretty complicated. I'm guessing/hoping they'll come up with an equivalent "auto-nooter" fairly soon for us. I'm waiting for that because I don't want to mess it up.

I have the Nook color, but seldom use it. What does rooted mean? My library has very few titles available and I hate to buy a book. I also read a lot in the hot tub and don't want to get it wet. It seems really too bright after a while so I usually give up.

rooting is similar to "jailbreaking" an Apple Device if you've heard of that.

It takes the locks that the standard Barnes and Noble firmware puts on the system and gives you access to a more full featured Android system. So after you "root" you aren't limited to just the Barnes and Noble features. You can shop at the Android Marketplace (which has much more available and cheaper prices right now that Barnes and Noble), put a Kindle App on the nook color screen and read your books from Amazon etc. Note: It does void your warranty put it's easy to remove if you need to send the nook color in for warranty issues.

I have a hard time reading my nook color outside too. I've never tried it around water. I usually read in the bathtub with my older Kindle 2 in a ziploc bag. I don't think that'd work with the nook touchscreen.

I usually keep my brightness very low. I also keep it on night setting so the background is black and the words are white. The night setting doesn't work on some books, but I think they are mainly the free self-published book. No idea why they are not compatible with that setting.

As far as eye strain, it never bothers me. So many people who do not have a Nook Color say it would be a problem. Yet all the people I know who say things like that stare at a computer screen all day at work, go home and continue to stare at a computer screen or tv and don't complain about eye strain. But they are convinced the Nook will do it

The eyestrain definitely bothers me and I think it is the "staring at a computer" all day that does it. When I read before bed I really do need an eInk device or a regular book. I find that I just can't handle either the nook color or the iPAD at night although I do pull them out for PDF files during the day.

Then again, I smacked my husband for turning on Rocky V on the TV in the bedroom last night because the light coming off the tv screen was bothering me. I think my eyes are pretty sensitive to strain, probably one of those as I get older things....

They do have anti-glare screen protectors you can get through B&N.
But it will darken the screen and change the colors somewhat....
I wouldn't want that as I have several magazine subscriptions on my NC. Another thing I love about it. (plus I don't read outside)

I didn't mean to sound like eye strain isn't real or something. :goodvibes
Like I mentioned, the people I know IRL who claim eye strain don't even have a NC. A few have even said they bought a Kindle because the NC was too expensive. Then try to justify the purchase with minor details like eye strain, battery life, book selection.

So far the only negative I have with the NC is with B&N you can not make purchases outside of the U.S and Canada. And as I am only outside of the states a few weeks at a time it is not that big of a deal.
