Anyone familar with the general rules regarding nonrefundable airline tickets? I know not all airlines have the same rules for these. I'm looking at flying Continental roundtrip, and may be cancelling the return trip portion. My guess is you get nothing back.

Lord help me, but I cannot understand the way the fare fules are written. Sometimes its clear, other times not so clear.

Appreciate anyone familar with the how these situations are generally handled through the major airlines.

9 times out of 10 you get nothing back if you cancel one leg of your journey.

Thanks!

That's my take on the fare rules I've been reading. Seems like anyway I look at it, cancelling the return leg of a roundtrip nonrefundable airfare gets nothing as a credit or anything else. Thought I just might be missing something. :)

With Southwest, if you cancel the return leg of a roundtrip, you'd have the funds available as a credit to use within a year of the time you originally booked the ticket. I think they're the only airline that is this flexible though.

In many cases, a round trip ticket is cheaper then a one way. You may be better off with the round trip and eating the return end of it.

Yes, that is the good thing about Southwest. They don't charge those expensive change fees.

Very true, much cheaper to get a roundtrip than a one way fare on Continental for this flight. If I have to, eating the loss on a cancelled return leg isn't so bad.

I got an e-mail response from Continental telling me that I'd have up to a year to re-schedule my return leg, and will have to pay the change fee. The feel is $100.
