Crap. Crap. Really. I've been teaching for 6 years. 3 years in one county, 3 years in present county.. now I was just informed that I will not be re-appointed next year. Why?? No idea. All evaluations were satisfactory. My guess is it's budget related. It wasn't just me, there were 4 others from my school as well. Because I am only on an annual contract (would have moved to professional services next year!) the principal doesn't have to give me a reason..so it's just.. contract over. :(

I'm a single mom with 3 little kids. Pretty much devastated right now and have no idea what to do from here other than apply in another district and hope I can find something within driving distance..

I'm sorry for the vent.. I'm just really scared and upset now. :(

Education is an ugly place to be right now, and I am so sorry for your struggles. My district is laying off almost 30 teachers and all of them are tenured with over 5 years in the district.

I am sorry. That must be very stressful.
I am also employed by a school in MA and may be laidoff this year. If there is no job waiting for me to come back in September then unemployment is as off last day of school in June.
Besides looking for a teaching job -which may be very hard to find in Florida at the moment, maybe you could find work teaching outside a school by tutoring or setting up small one subject classes for Home Schooled kids. Here in MA Home schooled kids will go to small classes as they get older and Parents are out of there comfort in different subjects.
Best of luck!

I'm so sorry. My DW's school just cut 10 positions out of 65. Budgets are down. Tough time in education fubnding because with home values down, so are property taxes which are the main inancing vehicle of the schools. Keep your head up, stay focused on getting that next position.

We won't find anything out until march 31 here. I haven't even been evaluated yet for this year.

I'm sorry to hear this. This economy just keeps devastating people. I will keep my fingers crossed that something turns up soon.

I feel your pain. They are cutting budgets in AZ again which means education and medicaid will be destroyed. Lay offs stink! Here's hoping you find better work elsewhere. I have a back up plan to go work at the local gas station if I get laid off. It pays better and has free health benefits.

Good luck! and have a virtual hug:grouphug:

I'm a teacher who's been laid off three times in the past seven years, and am currently employed in Wisconsin, so I completely understand where you're coming from.

My suggestions:
1)Start sprucing up your resume NOW, get letters of recommendation from anyone and everyone you've had contact with. Start telling everyone you meet (friends and strangers alike) who you are, what your credentials are, and that you're looking for a job. (I actually had business cards printed up!)
2)Take advantage of all possible resources. As was already mentioned, you can start collecting unemployment the minute your current job is done, but trying to get ahold of the unemployment dept and get it all set up can be a long, tiresome project. Find out about any retraining programs available for you. Join listservs and other support groups.

I will hope for the best for you, and for all the others in a similar position...

Terri

I am so sorry! I am also a teacher and the current attitude toward our profession is very disheartening. My husband went back to school to become a P.E. teacher and has been unable to find a job since graduating in May. It is a scary time to be in education. Best of luck to you!

I'm sorry. We are here for you to vent.

Our school district let go of 20 teachers. Budget cuts. We have not been paid some money from the state (IL) and that doesn't help.

Maybe you could substitute next year if you don't find another job. I wonder if that would put you towards the top of the list since the principal, etc. knows you.

Maggie

:hug:I'm so sorry to hear that. Hoping you find something quickly.

I am so sorry. We, as a country, do not treat our teachers right, and the fact that you can be let go without being given a reason really bites.

Best of luck in finding another teaching job. Don't forget private schools and what a pp poster said about teaching for homeschoolers. You will join the rest of my teacher friends in my prayers.

WOW 3 lay offs! I'm impressed you haven't given up on teaching yet.

Attitude is totally stinky! People need to get a clue. Good luck to your husband.

Sorry to hear this. I was laid off from my district last year so I can feel your pain. A girlfriend of mine who lives in a different state from me has been laid off and rehired each year for the last 5 years! And she has tenure and teaches math a nigh needs area! It would be nice if money was pumped back into education!

So sorry. I also hope you are able to find something quickly. My DS is a 2nd year teacher in Special Education. I always worry for him, because of the cuts being made with education. I do not have a solution for you, but will keep you, as well as all other educators in my thoughts and prayers.

Education is one of the worst places to be right now. My cousin teaches in Brooklyn and so far so good (but that's becaus ethey have a hard time holding onto teachers at her school....they don't have to do lay offs to get rid of teachers there). Especially since teachers are the one's getting the brunt of the crap right now.

Education is not a place we need to be cutting but they are the chosen target right now. Hopefully that changes soon....

That would be so nice. Can't really figure out how anyone can justify targeting education as the place to make cuts.

If any cuts have to be made, it should be primarily in admin IMO. Teachers are vital but we could do with less planners and the like.

It's a shame. :sad2:
