Question for those from or live near NOLA (soccer question). There are rumors tonight that the USL Championship (minor league soccer, think AAA baseball) will announce an expansion team later today. If you are from the area, do you think it will get decent support?I know the NOLA Jesters 4th division (NPSL) team get decent support but to be honest, that’s equivalent to single a baseball. USL Championship is a decent quality league with a ESPN plus platform. For those from the area that don’t support the Jesters, would an upgrade in quality of play entice you to give the new team a chance (assuming the rumors are true)? Thanks for any responses in advance. :-) ⚽🤔👀

Rumor is the announcement will happen around 10pm ET tonight. We’ll see if that holds true.

The rumor might be false according to the internet at the moment. Who knows? :confused3 🤔

I hate to say it, but the South is full of football fans. I'm not sure if there will a whole lot of people willing to pay $$ to go watch soccer in Louisiana. But if it were an LSU vs Ole Miss football game? People would like up for days.

Well, I’ll say this as a northerner who has seen soccer fail and succeed in the South. Every recent southern pro team in the last 5 years seems to have had success. Atlanta, Nashville, Charlotte, Austin, Orlando, and Miami are just some examples. But those who live in the South might know better than me. This wouldn’t be MLS but a league below it. So how much that would affect attendance, I don’t know.

I’m from Nola & have no idea. But I will say nola ppl are very proud of Nola so I can see ppl supporting any competitive sport that represents Nola. Now, how much ppl are willing to spend money wise, I couldn’t say. And if it competes with other major sports like the Saints’ or Pelicans’ seasons, it would get less support.

I live in the region and soccer is popular with kids. Ours played through high school. Dh still referees.

Family members have been to pro games in Nashville and Orlando. We were at the game where Abby Wombach officially retired in New Orleans.

Our family faithfully watches pro soccer as much as American football.

I think there will be interest in this team.

Soccer runs in most leagues from March to October usually. Matches are usually 1 or 2 a week.

USL Championship tickets are usually less expensive than MLS tickets as well.

That could work b/c it only slightly overlaps basketball & football seasons. Must high schools have soccer teams, but it’s nowhere near as big of a deal as football.

Pro soccer teams work with the local kids by starting team funded academies to develop talent. Majority of all pro teams make strong community ties that make them a positive member in the community. Soccer is firstly community based and is known to be the most inclusive and diverse. This could help areas that are still recovering financially from hurricane Katrina.

Rumor is the team would want to start before the 2026 World Cup with a likely start date in 2024. Again this is all speculation. It’s seems true that the NOLA team will happen but the negotiations are still happening. :confused3 🤔

The rumor is that a renovated baseball stadium would become a new soccer specific stadium for the team. Again, take this with a grain of salt.

Matches are also usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays (sometimes on Sunday).

The latest rumor this morning is that the announcement has been moved to next week but the team is a sure thing to happen.
:confused3 🤔

For those from the area, has any local media or sports radio talked about the rumor at all? Just curious. :-)

(I know this is about soccer, but...)
