Are you allowed to wear noise cancelling earmuffs while on rides like rock n rollercoaster or avatar flight of passage?
My son has had a real issue with loud sounds over the past few months to the point where we cannot go to a movie theater now... He wants to do rides like soaring, flight of passage and the coasters but I know the sound is going to be too much.

Should be no problem. My son wears them on Big Thunder and Space Mountains as well as Star Tours.

I have worn them on a number of rides/ roller coaster with no problem at all

Rock and roller coaster might be a problem because it loops all the way around other wise you should be fine

I would not wear them on RnRC, just because the harness is over-the-head and on some of the curves it is possible for your head to rattle from side to side. I have banged the side of my head more than once when I was not ready for it. I don't know if they are allowed or not, but I know that it would really hurt to bang your head, and you cannot always reach up to adjust them or grab them, depending on the reach of your arms.

All the other coasters at Disney are not looping, so the restraints are all lap bars.

I was wearing my over the head ear muffs in line for RNR and I asked to be in the front and still had them on when I was getting on there was a CM right infant of me when getting on. I did take them off when I got in but no CM said a word too me. about taking them off I did have a cm ask me to take my back pack off so that I would be ready to get on. I will say this for me my head bounces more in the back then the front.

Perhaps you took them off before the CM had a chance to ask you to take them off?

OP - RnR is very smooth, but I wouldn't risk them flying off and hitting someone else - perhaps some kind of tether could be attached? (But then if they fell off, he'd be stressed by the noise and maybe even getting hit by the muffs himself?)

Thank you all! I might get him some that he puts in his ears for rock and roller coaster, even though they don't work the best I rather not worry about them falling off in the loops lol!

I would think they would tell me when they asked me to have my bag off so I could bard. I do not need them on the ride just for the line and at the very end of the ride but I just plug my ears with my hands

Forgive my ignorance, but are noise cancelling headphones going to be enough on RnRC? It's a loud ride with the speakers right by your head. Do the headphones work that well?

I have never used mine on RNR I would guess it would damper the noise so it was not too loud. The ones that Goes in your ear would help too

I'm just curious, why does he wear ear muffs instead of small hearing protectors? DS is a professional musician, and is very protective of his hearing. His girlfriend recently wanted to go to a heavy metal concert so DS went with his hearing protectors in-no one could see them.

My son can't handle in ear plugs...they cause a lot of pain for him, even the soft foam ones for small ears. He uses the 3M Peltor ear muffs.

By the way, those are VERY snug. They will not fly off on a roller coaster, even upside down. They aren't like normal music headphones. They literally feel like a vise on your head.

They are permitted on every Disney ride. We were assured of this at Guest Relations when we got our son his DAS.

I use the same things and they are tight on you, I can sometimes handle the ones that goes in your ears for 5 -15 minutes ( 15 is on a very good day) glade you talked to GR about using them on the ride, I got the fact I could keep mine on when I went but do not really need them for the ride but at the end part.

Another in-ear option is using custom molded earplugs. There are companies that specialize in creating them as well as a number of DIY tutorials on crafting them with food grade RTV silicone. This is what you see on a lot of musicians who have to stand in front of those big speakers for a concert.

That's good to know, as at Universal, they even make you empty out your pockets on some of the coasters...

His ears are so small that I haven't been able to find ones that go in his ears that will stay without falling out. :(

My ASD son just turned 10 and has been wearing his noise dampening headphones for many years now at WDW. He prefers the Kidz Bandz. I like the bandz because they collapse/fold in a manner that makes them compact and allows me to slip them onto the strap of my crossbody bag. This is much easier for him to advocate for himself when he needs them, and it allows me quick access to pass them to him instead of having to grab them out of a backpack.

For him, it's not about silencing the environment in regards to a ride like RnR coaster. They dampen the ambient noise enough that it's not overwhelming, still allows him to hear some of the background music, and most importantly does not block our the voices of his parents if we need to speak to him. Having an over the ear headphone works best for him because part of his sensitivity is feeling "protective" of his ears in loud situations. That in part is why we have not tried noise protection you insert into your ear....which would drive him batty to feel anyhow with his sensory sensitivities.

He's worn them in every closed environment that bothers him the most such as indoor queues, noisy restaurants, rides, or if the proximity of a vocal baby/toddler is bothering him. ;-) The shoulder restraints on RnR coaster do not present ANY problem at all for his headphones, and in fact stabilize his head more than if he wasn't wearing any ear protection.
