Are the little buggers out in mid-August? DH & his Sis were nearly eaten alive one June - the welts lasted for MONTHS. They're headed for HH if there is even the slightest chance of a no see'um at Vero.

We were there in mid-August last year, and did not have any problem with these bugs. There were some mosquitos, but only at the campfire, and bug spray seemed to help.

According to the resort brochure you receive at check in - they are common after dusk when temps are higher than 70 degrees - so August would definately qualify. We were there Labor Day weekend one year and were eaten alive. We did not use any bug spray - learned our lesson the hard way.

Any northerners reading this thread are probably saying, "What the H***??" :D

We've gone to Vero the last two years in August and the no-seeums were horrible! Despite tons of insect repellent I was eaten alive. DH and DS weren't as bad. I have no advice on preventing the bites, but do not go out without insect repellent. The CM's recommend no perfume, or hairspray. Its still a lovely resort, but the bites are a problem. Benadryl spray is a must!!

I did alittle research on these pesky critters. They are attracted by Carbon Dioxide!! I haven't figured out how to not breath for a whole vacation!! Bug spray is still the only recommendation and avoid outside activities at night.
Bad news for your alternate plan, I hear that HH has them too.

Sorry

Making our first trip home to VB in October and then in January. How is the bug situation then?

A daily Vitamin B1 tablet will help keep away insects. Start taking them about two weeks ahead of time.

really? where did you get this information? How does it work? Since these types of insects (including gnats and mosquitos) are attracted by carbon monoxide, why would it affect them? Sorry for the barrage of questions, but if this is truly a solution I'm all over the vitamin tablets!! Bugs love me!

Our last trip to Vero was in August and the little buggers were intense. The last day of the trip, one of the waitresses told us that the Skin So Soft by Avon was effective on the Noseeums but the regular bug spray worked better on the moistquitos. She recommended a combination. I will be trying it in June for my next trip. Although I was pretty well bitten, I still think Vero is well worth the bites.

On Cape Cod in the summer time the little critters come out at Dusk. Bens insect repellant seems to work well. Cigar smoke, while not always pleasant for others, seems to be a good deterrent. :smooth:

I've spent a lot of time staffing summer camps in Louisiana, Missouri, and now New Mexico. Of course, we don't have the bug problem in the New Mexico mountains.

Vitamin B1 with Thiamine (sp?) works much like a garlic tablet would by emmitting a slight odor through the skin. However, unlike garlic tablets, this odor is not offensive to humans. It does take a couple of weeks of daily intake to build this up in your system. Also, you need to take a specific B1 tablet; a multi-vitamin or B complex won't work.

This has worked for me for over ten years. If I know I'm going to be in an area where the bugs are unusually thick, I do add some reppellant.

Avoiding perfumes and heavily scented soaps will also help keep the bugs at bay. Also remember that some bugs are attracted to the salt on the skin - from the ocean or from perspiration.

I am definitely going to try the B1 recommendation. I have gone to VB since 1995 and the No SeeUms have left huge welts that take months to disappear. I look totally diseased. I have taken all sorts of precautions. Basically it is unsafe for me to do anything but stay in the room. I think only some people have that kind of reaction. I am not allergic to anything except them. My son gets a few bites bu they are no big deal. I have tried all the bug sprays and Skin So Soft. Vero Beach is the only place I have a problem and we are headed there in June.
