No More Photo Packages at Character Meals or Resorts !!!

Why would Disney have pumped so much money into the technology unless it either increases revenues or reduces costs? It is not really a revenue generator so it must be costs - and what are Disney's biggest cost? The staff.

They are a business not a charity!

I noticed a change with the photo pass (now memory maker), no more cd, you down load all your photos.

No, memory maker is a product not sold by PhotoPass that is digital only. The Disney PhotoPass archive disc is still available and sold by PhotoPass.

This line is standing out to me:

5) In addition, with the ability of going directly to your room, Front Desk Staff have been told of layoffs.
I don't know if I like this...

The important part is it's an ability, not a requirement. If you do not want to bypass the front desk you do not have to. You will still be able to check in as always

. . . I don't know if I like this...

1) Such is life,
2) Disney did not invest 1½-2 $Billion just for the guest benefit.
3) They expect a return.
4) One of the "savings" is a drastic reduction in Front Desk CM's.
5) They will still be there, but not in large numbers.
6) If using the Front Desk for check-in, expect future long waits.

Ugh - I don't object to them removing this, but I am annoyed its with so little notice. When doing my cost / benefit analysis and booking ADRs, I always include the chef Mickey pictures with MM in the price..l

You still get the pictures with Chef Mickey. Just digital, no print

Yes - but the print package is nice because the day we return my kids can each have a 4x6 photo to bring to school to share and put in their journals without me having to print something out

Then just buy the prints at the view stations?

Touchdown on all points

Which is an inconvenience for any non-US guests, since Disney will not ship MagicBands outside the US, forcing such guests to use the front desk to check in.

:-(

I hear you...but there's no going back on this...

Employees should see their future pay decrease on the whole when the bands rolled out...that was always a main goal.

I think for our foreign friends...your likely to see some sort of new distribution system with bands in the future...maybe a new type of "non-skilled" kiosk concept or even vending type system...
Having guest service types do checkins is going to be severely reduced or eliminated...alot of overhead there and no profit.

I blame the line to check in at the Caribbean customs house on a Sunday circa 1999 for the death of the check in desk...just my theory.

1) Since it is finally out-in-the-open, I can say that Princess Meal Photo Packages are also going bye-bye.
2) These are CRT and Akershus.
3) This is as of Janaury-2015.

That is sad. I am going in August for the one and only time my kids will tolerate it (teens). We've never done it before. Glad I will still get the photos.

It's actually a good thing...

Some of the worst food (arguably the worst) at wdw is at those two princess-o-ramas...and ridiculous overpriced.
Now they don't have the pictures to shield the ridiculous price anymore...

Maybe that will spur some positive change due to negative feedback.

That probably works out well for disney because CRT is down for refurb starting in january

2) There are going to be LOTS of layoffs due to this move.

I must be missing something here.

We're talking about those awful photos they force you to take with a generic "Chef Mickey's" plate before entering the restaurant, right? The photos that they later pre-print and then try to hock at the table for $30-40 each? The photos you may think kinda, sorta look fun, which then get buried in a desk drawer when you return home??

Good riddance!!!

As for "lots of layoffs", this only impacts 5 restaurants...plus 2 more next year. Exactly what sort of staffing does it take to produce those photos? There's a photog and handler when you enter. Maybe a couple behind the scenes people printing (and later recycling) the photos?

At most, I don't see this being more than a couple dozen employees total. And with Disney advertising for 1000 new positions, sounds like people in this role have other options available.

Can you elaborate on this one? Is it like the other character meal photos you said where going away? When the photo is not going away, just the printed photo you can buy is going away. Will the photo still be taken?

Good points. And the photographer isn't even going anywhere. They are still taking the photos. Just the printing and the person who then walks them around the restaurant are stopping.
