No more Champions 5k at ESPN the Weekends?

Today they announced that ESPN the Weekends will no longer be occurring at WDW, so what does that mean with the race? Will they replace it with another theme like Flower and Garden? Continue to run it without the weekend? Or just end the race altogether? Let the speculation occur.

Well Bummer... It wasn't a huge desire of mine to run the event, but since DH wanted to do the ESPN weekend eventually I kind of figured I'd get to do the run. I'm going to guess they won't replace the event. Since the weekend was meant to attract athletes, rundisney probably figured they could make some extra money off those athletes/ runners in town for the weekend. Are there any other weekends without major races that are geared towards athletes?

Funny just after last month they set the dates for the 2012 ESPN the Weekend! The mouses bean counters killed it!

I have got an update. I received an email back from rundisney and they confirmed that the race is indeed cancelled and will no longer be run. They also in turn said that they are looking at new races and new concepts to add to their current lineup, so hopefully a replacement is not too far out. Easily can make it another flower and garden race and make it a bigger weekend than what was previously there for the flower and garden. I s like the idea of the Epcot events medal if you complete both food and wine half and flower and garden if it ever came to fruitition.

The replacement race will probably be a Half Marathon. All but EEC(which I think will be gone next year or the following year), Disney race are all revolved around a Half/Full Marathon weekend. They offer a 5K option plus the better attended long race on Sunday. TinkerBell and W & D Half are great examples of this new Half Marathon Weekend races. The W & Dine basically replaced the old Wine & Dine 10K and Tower of Terror 13K/6K.

I'm going to hold out hope that they add a Flower and Garden half weekend and then offer a Epcot double if you do it and the W&D. That is what I was hoping for before the disaster that was the Tinkerbell announcement.

What would the course be? They already use the same for Jan and Feb so would they use the same in April or May? I doubt they would use the W&D 1/2?

I'm not really sure. I think they could do a race that starts at Epcot, goes to AK, and finishes back at Epcot. I'd prefer to run through AK than DHS and would love to finish by going around WS like the January full.

Personally I'm still hoping for a new Disney Triathlon.........................

Oh, I hope not! I wanted to do the EEC someday but since I live on the west coast I have to wait for timing to be right. :(
