I'm just coming on here to say what a joke I think Amazon is. I purchased 3 items last week because I had one of those $10 off a baby item coupons. My mom had received a gift card for Christmas and never shops on Amazon, so I told her that I would put it under my name and when she wanted something I would get it for her and use that card. When I went to do my purchase, the gift card was the first payment to come up so I went to change payment types but then the promo code went away. sigh. So I did an online chat with someone who said that they still saw the code, but I let them know the error code that I was seeing on my end. when I tried entering the code again it told me that it was now used. :confused3 so he issued me a new promo code. I exited Amazon and went back in and now had 2 promo codes. I ended up calling my mom and asked if I could just use her gift card for my items instead of messing with the payment type. She said yes and I figured all was well.

Yesterday I received a notice from my bank saying that I was overdrawn. I had no idea what that was for so I went online and checked. It looked like Amazon had taken money out of my account on 2 separate days after I had placed my order :confused3 I called customer service and talked to someone who said that on my invoice it shows that my payment type was my checking account, and also, it was the full price amount, no promo codes were used. what? I had printed confirmation that the money came off the gift card and that the promo codes were used. She had me fax info to the billing dept requesting money back and the overdraft fee back. I did that and received an email today saying that Amazon was not at fault.

I immediately called them and spoke to someone, telling my story over again. I ended up speaking with a supervisor (telling my story again ) I finally said, if I send back my items, will I get my money back? and he said yes. Though that seems kind of ridiculous that for something that is not my fault, I don't even get to keep the things that I wanted in the first place. I never would have purchased them without the coupon, at full price, or taken the money out of my checking account!!!!!!! I'm so angry. So now I have to get to the post office to mail back this ridiculous stuff to Amazon. I just want my money back! The bank keeps charging me $6.99 for every day there is not money in my account! The supervisor said that he would email the billing dept himself. We'll see what happens with that...

I now officially hate them. Thanks for listening.

Well that does suck but you really have NO money in your bank account? Go make a deposit so they will stop charging you $6.99 (which is ridiculous)!

Sorry that you had such a mix up.

FWIW, I have been an Amazon Prime customer for over 2 years. I have done at least 100 orders by now and never had a problem.

I had to call customer service once for my daughter's Kindle and they were great.

I hope you can get this straightened out.

that's pretty cheap for having nothing in your account. Is there any way you can get some money in there to stop it ? I would continue to talk to Amazon to cover the charge and the overdraft fee but I can't see them paying more than 1 day of fee's.

I wouldn't return the stuff since it will still takes days, if not weeks, to return the money to your account and each of those days you are getting charged so you need to get money in there before then. You'll end up paying way more for the items you returned than you will n the money you are getting back.

Maybe she doesn't have the money? :confused3

yes, don't judge! DH was unemployed for several months and we are trying to build our way up. which is why I would never have taken money out of that account!

I was waiting to get the email from Amazon to see if I would be getting back the fees. Now that they are not going to be doing that and I am waiting again, apparently I will now have to do something about this on my own, which I don't feel is my responsibility, but such is life. I am hoping that they cover all the fees.

Not judging at all. Just suggesting you put money in the account ASAP so they stop charging you every day for not having money in the account.

I agree it's going to take forever to get your money back.

I love Amazon! I have never had a problem with them before and have heard very few people ever having one with them. I did as much of my Christmas shopping as I could with them, even paying a few dollars more sometimes because they are so reliable.

I'm sorry you are having a problem but do agree it is stupid to let your bank continue with the overdraft. There is no where you can get the money? how about your Mom?

so you would rather pay $7 a day to prove a point rather than take care of it and then seek a solution. That is just not smart. Stop the leak then find a permanent solution.

Have you been to your bank yet with the copies of your electronic receipt to dispute the charges?

If you can show the bank that you paid with a gift card, and have a receipt to prove it, you can dispute that they took the money erronously out of your checking account.

It might help to try.

I have also only had good customer service with Amazon - in fact outstanding just a month ago with a Kindle issue. But that doesn't mean that screw-ups never happen like what happened to you.

I would continue to talk to Amazon, going up the ladder as far as you can and also working with your bank to get the charges reversed.

Although you said you would never take the $ from your checking account - amazon had to have that account on file to charge it.

Not defending Amazon but I have never had better customer service anywhere. They are my first go to for anything I am purchasing.

It sounds like the last person you spoke with wants to make it right maybe you can allow him the opportunity to do so. Hope it works out.

I realize that they made an error however having some money in your acct to avoid the daily fees, is your responsibilty. Amazon should pay for the first day but since its your banks and you agreed to their terms, you are the one who is responsible to make sure your acct has something in it from that point foward.(Not judging, but I don't understand how you don't see that as your responsibility :confused3 I would continue to call Amazon to see if they will cover your fees, or issue a GC for your trouble, they generally have great CS.

Was your checking acct the primary funding source? Regardless, I'd delete it permenantly from your Amazon acct.

How frustrating that must be for you OP. Bad customer service on the part of Amazon. They should have been able to spot the errors and considering the fact that a second code was issued, they should have been able to verify what was going on but instead of doing that they irritated and lost a potential customer who is now spreading word of discontent. Considering the millions companies spend on advertising to get people to consider them one would think they would seriously consider the cost of losing repeat customers over small stuff like this, I bet if they offered free shipping or some other small token things would have been improved. They had no right to repeat the order, frankly I would go to the bank and file fraud charges againt Amazon and try to collect the fees from them that way. They can't charge you twice and incomplete orders are their fault if they are the ones handling the transaction. Again, very bad business sense and a classic example of the left hand not paying attention to what the right hand is doing.

I have never shopped on Amazon and after hearing this I never will. I hope that everything works out and they refund the money and the fees.

This is why I never use my checking account (debit card number) for anything online or over the phone.

doesn't matter, they make more than enough money from me that they'll never even notice if you don't shop there. The UPS driver calls me his Amazon stop.

I've been shopping at Amazon for well over 10 years and have had maybe 2 problem orders. One was last week where I ordered 3 items but only two were delivered. They overnighted me my missing item and I had it within 24 hours of sending an email.

Every company makes mistakes occasionally. Overall, I hear an overwhelming number of good stories in regards to Amazon vs bad.

I adore Amazon. With Prime, I do a ton of shopping there. I ordered something with 2 day delivery yesterday, and got it today.

That sounds so frustrating!

It sounds like you were trying to pay another way but ended up using the gift card (which was on your account, but really you intended it to be for your mom). How were you going to pay for it before you decided to use the gift card? I know we have a credit card on file with amazon, and our orders automatically default to that. Was your bank account info already on file with amazon and that's how they used it?

Or at least get overdraft protection on that account. My bank charges me $25 a year for $2,500 overdraft protection. As long as I put money in the account within 30 days of the overdraft, there is no additional charge for this service. If I don't, then I pay 18% interest.

The reality is, no matter what company you are talking about, mistakes can happen, and money can be taken out of your account without your knowledge. Overdraft protection protects you until you can get the mistaken corrected.
In my case MY BANK mistakenly overpaid a check by $1,000, causing multiple overdrafts. They paid all the checks with the overdraft, then called me to call my attention to this. You should have heard the branch manager apologize when she pulled the check I wrote for $180, and saw they had instead paid out $1,180.
