My dd16 will be 17 next week and will be taking her rode test. Do we need to buy her those red stickers now in order for her to take the test? I was under the impression she needed it once she passed, but she is telling me she needs it in order to take the test. That if they are not already on our car she will fail.

She got her permit a year ago and that law came into effect in May. To be honest, I didn't really pay too much attention to it, thinking we just had to buy them when she passed her drivers test.

DH is taking her for the road test, so I just want to be sure we have everything in order before they go. Thanks

Obviously can't answer your question but just curious what the red sticker are?

My niece lives with my parents in NJ and just got her permit, from what I understand you need to buy a sticker for every car the new driver will drive and the sticker stays on till the driver is 18....I grew up in NJ and they didn't have that back in the old days....:lmao:
Sounds like a big money making deal for the state....I think my mom said they were $35 each and she had to buy her 2......

NJ teen driving laws are probably the strictest in the nation. You take your drivers test at 17, and then you are given a provisional license, and have stickers on the car you drive identifying yourself as a provisional license holder, limiting how many underage passengers you can have in the car.

The stickers are $4 a pair. They are sold at the DMV office.

Did your niece say she needed $70 to buy the decals? ;)

Thankfully, my oldest 2 missed those rules. I am hoping that by the time DD14 is ready to drive, the stickers are gone. I really don't need wackos on the road, knowing that my 17 year old is alone in car :scared1:.

I honestly don't think the stickers are going to stop kids from driving recklessly or stop them from having accidents.

Big brother needs to back off already!! :rolleyes1

Whatever your opinions about whether or not to follow the law, I believe that the OPs question was about the road test - you MUST have the stickers on a car that is being used to take the road test. They cost $4 and can be obtained at any MVC office.

exactly...
I am unsure what we will do when she passes the test. But we will buy them so she can TAKE the test.

That was my first thought when I saw what the red stickers were. Kids here can only have one non-related driver in the car for their first 6 months driving then only 3 up to the first year. If a police officer thinks a kid has too many kids they pull them over and check. If they do they lose their license until they are 21.

No stickers here in California, but we have the same restrictions on underaged drivers. No sure stickers would work here because there are circimstances where provisional drivers are exempt from the law (which if off topic).
I could see where the sticker would raise safety issues. Didn't Florida have a law requiring rental cars to have license plates indicating they were rental cars? And didn't they end up repealing the law because those license basically were billboards saying "rob me"?

Yes and Yes!

thanks everyone!! She passed her road test on Friday!!

I have so much reading up to do, I honestly did not look into this *Kayleigh's law* all that carefully since my dd got her permit last Oct and this law went into effect in May.

If I am reading it right, my daughter cannot have more then 1 person in the car with her until she turns 21?? Seriously?? Please tell me I am reading this wrong. She has two sisters and I was really looking forward to have her take them both places at times!! How the heck is this going to work...if the 3 of them need to be someplace I will still need to drive them??

That is true, with one correction...unless a parent or guardian is also in the car then a probationary driver may only have one additional passenger. This restriction is removed once she is no longer a probationary driver, which is one year after she obtained her license. So once she reaches the one-year anniversary of her license, at 18, the restrictions are removed.

Note that the restrictions are removed ONLY after she returns to NJMVC to get her regular license. As long as she has the bright yellow bar that indicates she is a probationary driver, she MUST follow the probationary restrictions. My daughter's friend got a ticket for having too many in the car even though she'd had her license for 14 months. She hadn't yet gone to get her license changed and was cited.

The only time any additional passengers are permitted is if they are parents, guardians or dependants (so she can drive with both her parents in the car, but NOT both her sisters)

You must observe the following requirements and restrictions while driving with a probationary (formerly provisional) license:

* Display a reflectorized decal on each license plate (front/back); decals available at motor vehicle agencies, $4 per pair
* No driving after 11:01 p.m. and before 5:00 a.m.
* Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependant(s) are allowed as passengers. A dependant is a permit or probationary driver's child, not siblings
* Only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
* You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hands-free interactive, wireless communication device
* Seat belts must be worn at all times
* See GDL Exemptions for hours-related exemptions for employment or religious reasons

ok thanks, I did know she was OK to drive if me or dh was in The car, but I was so looking forward to letting her drive her sisters on a night all 3 of them have 4-H. I was hoping to get a night off from having to leave my house!! lol!

So a year from now she can go and get a new license?? Will she have to pay? This one is good until 2014. that makes no sense.

Graduated Driver License restrictions
In addition to the decal requirement, effective May 1, 2010, New Jersey GDL drivers will also be subject to the following restrictions:

May not operate a motor vehicle after 11:01 p.m. and before 5:00 a.m.
May not use a hand-held or hands-free interactive, wireless communication device
Unless over age 21, GDL drivers may only drive with the following passengers:
Special Permit Holders:Supervising driver who is over 21 and licensed to drive for at least three (3) years
-Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependent(s)
-One additional passenger unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Examination Permit Holders
-Supervising driver who is over 21 and licensed to drive for at least three (3) years
-Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependent(s)
-One additional passenger unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
Probationary (formerly Provisional) License Holder
-Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependent(s)
-One additional passenger unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Failure to abide by any GDL restriction during operation of a vehicle by a learner’s permit, an examination permit or probationary license holder, who is subject to the GDL requirements, is a violation subject to a $100 fine. See N.J.S.A. 39:3-13.8

Ok now I am more confused...this is what I read..doesn't it mean that NJ drivers have to be age 21 before they can drive more then one person??
