Nintendo DSi Questions

Is the DSi able to play Nintendo DS games? Is there such a thing as just games for the Nintendo DSi? What is the DSi able to do that the Nintendo DS is not able to? Is there any other gadgets that I need to get other than the main DSi handheld game system, and cartridges?

Any other helpful suggestions, and tips are greatly appreciated.

I am buying this for a 7 year old girl-so cartridge suggestions....

I'd like some info too. We're either getting DD a DS or DSi for Christmas. I'd lean toward a DS since she doesn't need the extra features and it's less expensive, but I fear the DS may become obsolete and they make start making less games for it and more for the DSi.

I don't want to get her the Beta or laser disc of kids' games.
