My brother and I ate at Nine Dragons last December.
Well, because I'm a Disney planner and he's lazy, I've already started to push him into picking some restaurants for this next December trip.

He wants to do Nine Dragons again but thought the lunch portions were incredibly small.
Is dinner considerably larger? I saw that the price goes up incredibly but we'll be on the dining plan so it's not a main concern...

TIA! :goodvibes

Hey neighbor, we like 9dragons and agree that the servings at lunch time are small. While the dinner entrees are a little bigger--not much, I still find the lunch menu to be the best value. We often do the lunch for 2 special, which gives you 3 dishes to split and soup and appetizer. We also order a side order of dumplings (pot stickers). Keep in mind we usually will ask to subsitute at least one of the dishes for another on the menu, as we don't care for all of the dishes they select for the special. They have always accommodated us. By adding the extra appetizer, we find there is enough. So IMHO, I don't think the extra dinner prices will justify the slight larger portions.

Personally I think its an amazingly over rated place, but I'm spoiled I've been to Hong Kong a few times, Lived in San Francisco, spent time in Singapore which has a huge Chinese community, etc.

So by my expectations its only ok Chinese food and overpriced at that... so not worth the extra cost of eating on campus.

If however you come from a US city with little or no Chinese community and are under the misaprehension that egg foo young and chop suey are in fact authentic chinese food than yes by all means go.

However, this is one of those times when its a good idea to experience the greater Orlando area. There are in fact some amazing dim sum places off campus (see any travel book) that are full to the gills with chinese (who aren't by the way flocking to dragons based on my previous experiences there).

Have you tried the Swedish place? Or the German? Both are very good, also fairly authentic and tend to be less popular for some reason.

Not everyone is so lucky to have lived / traveled abroad. :rolleyes2

Thanks for the permission. I'm under no 'misaprenhension' (not under any apprenhension at all when dining here as a matter of fact) that this is authentic Chinese food. It's just food that I like. BTW, neither of the dishes you mentioned are served at Nine Dragons........just thought you might like to know.

By Swedish, do you mean the Norwegian restaurant? In case you weren't aware of the menu change, Akershus Royal Banquet Hall now has Princess themed breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. There are visitors who aren't interested in seeing the Princesses during their meal, and I happen to be one of them. But the biggest reason I, and so many others, don't eat at these restaurants is for one simple reason.......They don't serve food that I care to eat.

To the OP, my husband and I tend to like going for a late lunch (I believe the lunch menu is served until ~4 pm). We love the Honey-sesame Chicken, the Shao-mai, pot-stickers, pork sticky buns and some of the other dim-sum offerings. Even though we're on the dining plan for our next trip we'll still go for lunch, since the variety of dim-sum isn't as extensive on the dinner menu. We've also ordered off the dinner menu and quite honestly, the portions are almost the same size as they serve for lunch, but the price is higher.

Hmm..thanks everyone and japlady, thanks for your opinions. But as I stated in my Original Post-- we've already eaten there and liked it. My only question was about the portion size. :)

I know you only asked about portion size, but may I be so bold as to recommend an appetizer? It's the skewered beef--absolutely delicious! I tasted my DH's and then flagged down the waiter to order my own!

I would say that the dinner portions are marginally larger than the lunch portions...like someone else suggested, you could get 3 entrees and I'm sure that would be plenty. But actually, since you'll be on the dining plan, maybe when you add in the appetizers and desserts, you'll have enough to eat with just 2 entrees. The beef skewers are VERY VERY good and so are the spring rolls (appetizers). I've never had dessert here though, so I can't really comment on that (however, their honey sesame chicken entree is my FAVORITE and I highly recommend it!).

While we did love the beef skewers and our entrees I must admit that the dessert at Nine Dragons was probably the worst I have had at WDW. I would fill up on the other food and skip dessert at Nine Dragons!

Oh yeah? Interesting stuff! We'll be on the dining plan when we eat there in September, so we'll probably just give a try anyway, but that's disappointing to hear.

When we were there the only dessert they had was a chocolate mousse thing. If they have ANYTHING else the day you are there I suggest you order that instead. (I love chocolate mousse and this was just awful--all 8 of us agreed)

We have eaten lunch at Nine Dragons three times and we have left full every time. Our group consists of myself, DH and 19 year old DS. Everyone's opinion is different, but we were very pleased with the portions, and we continue to return. Good luck!

We've eaten at Nine Dragons four times in the last year (lunches and dinners) and never had room for dessert...

I think the portion sizes - particularly for the Nine Dragons Fried Rice, a family favorite - are more than adequate. We tend to get both appetizers, entrees and, always, the Fried Rice.

We feel that the portion sizes for the entrees that we ordered for dinner were very large, we are DVC members and stay at BWV and always have a doggie box to bring back (plus we have healthy appetites!). As an aside, my husband grew up in Hong Kong and his family would go to restaurants 3-4 times a week because his mother was a food columnist for a HK newspaper and in his opinion the food that we have had at Nine Dragons has been very good. However, the cast members who have served us have steered us away from certain items on the menu before.
