I just bought a Nikon D60 so I am a newbie, but got to learn fast as we are leaving for Disney in 15 days

What accessories do you have or what do you reccomend

Also things not to buy

Thanks

To buy:

- A tripod (or Gorillapod)
- A remote shutter release
- A rocket blower
- A lens cleaning pen
- An Op/Tech camera strap (your neck will thank you)
- Lots of memory cards

Not to buy:

- Nothing, you'll be consumed by NAS soon enough and you'll want to buy EVERYTHING. :goodvibes

Thanks for the hints, I know my husband isn't excited about my recent purchase (he thinks he will need a second job to support my habit)

What kind of Memory Cards would you suggest

What kind of Memory Cards would you suggest

I have used SanDisk Extreme III, as well as SanDisk Ultra II 2 & 4GB cards and didn't really see too much difference in them. The Ultra IIs are cheaper, but they sometimes have GREAT rebates on the Extreme IIIs bringing the price down to like $15 after rebate.

I would also look into Kingston brand. On Buy.com they recently had 8GB cards for a crazy price---maybe $10 each---not sure if they have those anymore though.

Whatever the case may be, make sure you bring enough. The file sizes while shooting with the D60 (or any other dSLR) will be much bigger than those with a p&s and you may easily go through 4GB in memory per day depending on how much shooting you do.

Also---a tip that is frequently given out on this board is to NOT erase any pictures in camera. Even if you review them on the LCD and know that it isn't a good shot, or someone blinked, or it's blurry---keep it and delete it once it's on the computer. Apparently, the chances of getting corrupt files increase when you delete photos in camera.

Good luck and can't wait to see soem pics!

Thanks for all you help

How do you find taking a tripod into the parks esp. for fireworks

Thanks

This is all good advice. I also use the Sandisk cards and they work very well for me. Be sure to shop around for the best deals on cards (in addition to Buy.com also check out ecost.com).

Regarding your upcoming trip in the next two weeks... since you said you're a noobie, I'm going to assume you're new to the DSLR world and, at least more specifically, the D60. Therefore practice, practice, practice until you leave. You will want to get very comfortable with your camera before you leave and not stress trying to figure it out once you get there. It sounds boring, but read your manual and play with the settings. Also study some of the posters' galleries on this board for inspiration (many will have links to their galleries in their signatures). YOu will get the most out of your camera (and produce the best creative results) by learning how to take it off the full automatic settings. Your trip pictures will thank you.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Remote shutter release - Nikon
Rocket blower - Giottos
Lens cleaning pen - I use lens tissue or microfiber cloth
OpTech - I use Domke

I sometimes carry a 3 lb tripod but stash it in a locker until sunset. It is not much of a problem and just about the only way to get long exposures.

What not to buy - UV filter.

I was going to suggest that, but figured it would probably just stir the pot and start a friendly debate between the UV users and the UV haters. I didn't want to be the subject of any un-brotherly love. :goodvibes

Now Ann.... You know you like to start trouble!!!

I agree with everything that has been said here.

Yep, sometimes the pot just has to be stirred! ;)

For the OP who may wonder just what we are referring to, there are those who consider UV filters to be essential and those who wouldn't put them on any decent lens. Sometimes the two groups make the Hatfields and McCoys look like old friends! ;)

If you're looking for memory cards, I'd suggest looking here: hxxp://slickdeals.net/permadeal/20197/3x-4GB-Sandisk-Extreme-III-SDHC-Memory-Cards-12-After-60MIR

*Change the xx to tt since I can't post links yet*

3x 4GB Sandisk Extreme III SDHC cards for $12 after $60 rebate. Not a bad deal.

I got a 4GB Sandisk SDHC card (I believe it's an Extreme III, but I'll have to check) for $12 at Sam's Club...no rebate necessary...at the beginning of March.
