Right now I have a basic point and shoot kodak and am looking to upgrade. My main subject will be my daughter, and I also love taking pictures on vacation - especially Disney. Right now, the only thing that I am really able to afford is either a Nikon D40, or a Nikon D60. I read on a few websites that the D60 is basically a glorified version of the D40 but has a slower shutter speed. Quite a few websites recommended the D40 over the D60, but I wanted to get some opinions here as well.

I used the D40 for a year and a half before upgrading the body to the D300. I really liked the camera. It takes excellent pictures and is fairly simple to learn the menu structure. I still have the D40 and intend to keep as my backup and to use when I want to have a smaller camera without carrying all my gear along. Neither the D40 or the D60 have the focus motor in the body for lenses so when purchasing additional lenses, having the focus motor in lens if you dont want to be manually focusing, will be a consideration. I cant really give you a comparison to the D60, bc I never used one but I know it does have a few features the D40 doesnt. Check out dpreview.com you can do a side by side comparison of the features.

I've had my D40 since June '05 and I do not regret my purchase. I would like to upgrade to a more advanced body D300 or D90, but in my opinion you cannot go wrong with the D40.

When the day comes to upgrade I too will keep my D40 as a backup. It has also been a great camera to transition to from a P&S.

I love my D40. :thumbsup2 I am not an experienced photographer at all. I just like to take pictures of vacation, family, nature, etc. It takes gorgeous pictures and I have gotten many compliments on pictures I have taken. I don't think you would be disappointed in the D40.

The Ken Rockwell site solidified my decision to go with the D40 over the Rebel. I really like his information.

I have the D40 and couldn't be more pleased. I've had it a year and the pictures it takes are wonderful.

You might be interested in this deal at B&H on the D40 with 18-55 *and* 55-200VR. Note that the second lens is the VR version which, according to everything I have read, is a MUCH better lens than the non-VR.

HERE is the link. You have to put it in the cart to see the actual price, which is $549.95, shipped.

Thank you all so much! That really makes me more confident in my choice. I won't be able to upgrade for a really long time, so I want to get something good, but still in my price range.

Wow, that's a great deal!!! I am only able to spend about $600 and that looks perfect - thank you so much!

That's the site I had looked at that recommended the D40 over the D60. On your flickr site, are all of those taken with a D40??
