I'm looking for a nice place to stay near Busch Gardens Williamsburg. Last year we stayed at Chippokes Plantation - it was quite lovely and very inexpensive, but pretty far to BG, had to take the ferry back and forth. Is there anything closer? It seems like a lot of campgrounds in the area have closed down. We camp in a tent, so it has to be tent friendly :) Thanks!

The best one I always see recommende on the RV.net site is American Heritage Campground, there are also 2 KOA campgrounds that are good but much more expensive. We used to stay at the Pottery Campground when we had season passes but that place needs alot of work.

We stayed at American Heritage for 5 nights when we visited Williamsburg. I thought it was a very nice campground but I was especially impressed with the comfort station. It looked completely new and modern... and I loved the tile they used.

The Trailer Life 2011 directory has it as the highest rated campground in Virginia at 9.5/10/10. For comparison, Fort Wilderness is 10/10/10.

We went to Busch Gardens twice while we were there and while I don't remember exactly how long it took, I'm guessing it was between 15 and 20 minutes.

We've stayed at American Hertiage May of last year and at the KOA at the same exit in the opposite direction this last Oct when we were desperate after our ressies at the Ft. Eustis FamKamp in Hampton Roads failed to satisfy us. I like American Hertiage better and if you have kids when we left around the 5 of June they were putting up this HUGE dinasour sort of water slide that was like 300' long and maybe 30' or more high.

ON EDIT Forgot to add what I always do now is to look at a potential CG that I'm not familiar with via Google Earth which will show you it's where it's supposed to be and the general layout such as trees, sites, etc. It's a really great tool after you take some time to learn how to use it effectively.

We like Chippokes Plantation also. I can also highly recommend American Heritage RV campground as we have stayed there in the past. Just not sure how "tent" friendly it is as I really don't recall seeing any in there when we stayed there.

There is Newport News City Campground about 20 to 25 minutes down I-64 from BG. Similar to Chippokes Plantation but the comfort stations, while adequate, may not be as nice as Chippokes. NNCC is very tent friendly and very wooded. It is on a reservoir and I believe that you can still rent canoes and paddle boats.....no swimming facilities on property.

The tent area is the big open field on the right on the main road in. We saw several tenters there when we stayed there. Again, you can see that area via Google Earth. Of course a call to the CG wouldn't hurt or google and look at their website.[/ b]

Ya'll got me curious about this Anvil place. Read the google reviews. WHOA! If you are lucky, you'll be sandwiched right between the road and the RR tracks with the all night trains! :scared1:

If you are a light sleeper I would not recommend Anvil. But we like Anvil. We have stayed here at least 5 times. We have stayed at American Heritage once. It was OK, very tight spots.

There is a train that runs but it seems to run during the day and not while we sleep. We also keep the fans running which helps with any noise. The road traffic can be loud during the day but at night we have no problems. We are a go go family so we do not spend much time here during the day. It is so close to the parks and it is worth it to us. They offer a AAA discount and a returning discount so it makes it cheap for us.

Now if you are in a tent, I would not stay here but with a RV we enjoy it. The kids like watching the train. I know it is not for everyone but I just wanted to share our experience.

We always stay at American Heritage. On our last trip we decided to scout out some other campground and we went to Anvil. We were not impressed - seemed kinda dumpy and those RR tracks are soo-o-o close. You can hear the trains at American Heritage when they cross over one of the nearby roads (blowing their horns) but it's not too bad. Never have heard them at nighttime.
