Nice beaches & place to stay near Tampa Bay?

We're thinking of flying into Tampa Bay instead of Orlando for our trip in Nov./Dec. and would like to spend a day or 2 at a beach near there, ether before or after out time spent at WDW. Has anyone ever done this before and if so where is the nicest and cheapest place to stay and go to a beach that is great for families? We've never been to Tampa Bay before so any help is appreciated!

Not really sure since I've only been there twice now. But, my ds, and d-dil, take us west to the gulf when we have visited. The ride to St. Pete/Clearwater is about a half hour. I would think that you would want to head in that direction if you want to spend a few days at the beach.
