Okay... This weeks question gets right down to the basics of pin trading and collecting.

Why do you do this? What do you find to be the driving reason behind your hobby?

GREAT QUESTION NAT!!!!

Hmmmm let me see......so many reasons....so little time!

But MOSTLY.....it is my love of Disney....and that I can control the cost of it!
If I want to buy one pin a month (yeah right) or buy a whole LOT ....

There is so much more to it than having a collection of say......spoons.......

With the pins.....I frame and decorate with them.......I meet new friends.......go places because of them (pin meets and WDW)......I can share it with my son and his father......I even had a quote of mine in that collectors magazine last Christmas!

So in summary......why? Because Shirley38 made me. LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Remember ...........what good are the pins without the friends to go with them?

Well, I'll start. I pin trade just for the fun of it and the fact that it has also allowed me to meet, if only by e-mail or mail at times, some really nice people. I feel like I have gained a lot of new friends and that is why I enjoy this hobby. I try not to take the whole thing too seriously.

In the beginning, I had a hat with a few pins on it. Then the Millenium Celebration began, and with it the announcement of pin trading at WDW. So I put my pins on my denim jacket, headed to WDW for NYE and didn't trade once. Not only that, but I managed to meet every "shark" (as we so fondly refer to folk who take pin trading a little too seriously) and thought "geez, this wasn't much fun". Then I found the DIS boards and made a few trades and thought "now, this is fun!" I started building my collection but then something started to happen....I began making friends! Good friends! The pins became secondary. Don't get me wrong, I still love the pins..the thrill of the hunt, finalizing a great trade, managing to be at WDW at the right time and place...but the friends I have made are much more important to me now. I have said this before...it is so cool to walk around WDW and know people where ever I go! I even met someone while waiting in line at my TDS on Saturday morning...turns out we have a lot in common!

So, why do I stick with it? Because of all the firendships I have made as a result of a mutual interest in a cute piece of metal!!:D :D

At first it was so I could have something to spark memories of my first WDW vacation now it's to meet new people and make new friends.

As to the driving reason it's because I live in northern California and DL is in Southern California and walking is out of the question:D

 ;)   :p :) :smooth: </center>

For us it has to be the friendships we have made through pin trading. We love the pins, and we love collecting lots of different Disney items, but we now have met a lot of really great friends and our vacations to WDW are no longer just us or our family going through the parks not really communicating or meeting anyone else.

Why would we all keep up a hobby that breaks our wallets weekly. Makes us spend numerous hours on the computer searching for the missing pin in a set.....till our eyes pop out of our heads. Makes us run to meet the mailman like he is the most special person in the world. well its .......

THE PIN PEOPLE!!!! thats what keeps me in this hobby. I feel like I have friends all over the country now, and I love it. You guys are why I stay.....

Plus its the first collecting hobby the hubby, kids and I all like.
And I love Disney....my 16 year old loves to tell everyone her mother has O.D.D.

Nat, Nat, Nat; how do you keep coming up with these questions?!! Hmmmm........Well it obviously starts with the parks, and I have to admit I absolutely loved "the treasure hunt" at the parks when we were REALLY newbies and didn't know a "good" pin from a "not so good" pin! We had a ball running from CM to CM and all 4(me and the 3 "kids") of us enjoyed it equally; it gave us a whole new way to enjoy our vacation, and it was neat to meet strangers and strike up conversations with them. And I really hope when we go back that we can have the same kind of fun trading off of lanyards, even though our collections have grown a tad more "sophisticated" for lack of a better word.

I will be brave and admit what we all must share to some extent--I am absolutely obsessed! Not the first time I've suffered from "addiction (though I did escape beanies); and I am a compulsive buyer/collector. I am a little upset that I have spent the money I have, and would probably try to force myself to stop, except for the one other reason I do this........yes, you know.....
THE PEOPLE!

I have met some of THE nicest people at the 2 pin meets I've been to; and made "friends" with several others through our posts and chat, that I haven't met in person; people that are so warm and kind, that I would really miss them if I did quit this "hobby"! It's looking forward to the pin swaps and pin trades and seeing "old" and "new" friends at pin meets.....just can't
give it up............have to put myself on a budget though!

:bounce:

Well Ruthie... To be honest. I think about them all week and then narrow the field down by secret ballot and... Wait that is Jeffs survivor game... What I do is just make them up:)

 The thrill of the hunt.... The memories of trips with my wife and family.... Memorabilia from a company I like.... and I am incurable collector!! Those are some of the things that got me started.

Now, why do I keep doing it? Insanity yes, but also people. I slow down the collecting some times, but I can't stop reading the board and seeing what old friends that I have never (or rarely) met are up to. People like Zayne and Xavier's Mom and Dad were some of the first people I met here over 2 years ago. Others like TennisNut also helped me out along the way. If I stopped collecting it would be like letting these people down. :D

So really, I do it for them.... not for me and my greedy desires....
