Since discovering the miracle of flat ironing I have also discovered the curse of split ends. 
I bought the new Nexxus Pro Mend conditioner and also got the leave-in treatment (not overnight). This stuff totally works! I wash my hair every other day and the first few times it lasted 24 hours before I could see the split ends again, but as I continue to use it the effect seems to be longer than that now. The leave-in treatment was ~$14 at Walmart and I feel it was definitely worth the money.
I have long, thick, curly hair with dry ends and although it says to use a dime or nickel-size amount of product IIRC, I use that much on each side and also the back. I have a LOT of hair.
This is budget because a $14 investment could stretch the amount of time you can go between trims.
