I don't think I've seen this here, but I wonder if this is just the start of the realization for many that Disney vacation is no longer an affordable vacation. The author's note that, "Twenty-two years ago, a single-day ticket to Disneyland cost just $41. Adjusted for inflation, that same ticket would cost $62 today –making some guests wonder where the magic has even gone."

It also works the other way around. It was cheaper for me to fly to Miami from Europe for a Disney Cruise, then to fly to Barcelona for a Disney cruise.
Disney cruises in Europe are so expensive!

Going to Miami was a 9 hour flight, 2 pre-cruise days and 4 night cruise versus a 2 hour flight, 1 pre-day and a 5 night cruise (shortest cruise option in Europe that season)

@Narcoossee11 the article noted that price to fly to DLP and stay was $3,676.06, while the same vacation at DL would have cost $4,571.50 thus saving almost $900 by going to Paris.

I don’t believe it.

I just picked a random set of dates - May 1 to May. 8. Flights from Buffalo to Paris are $598, LA is $296.
7 day tickets at park paris: $387x2=$774, Disneyland tickets are $440+$390= $830.
and hotels off site can be had for similar prices.

This is a false story.

the on site HOTEL at Disneyland costs more than the on-site hotel at Paris. That’s all. Ticket prices are similar.

SF Gate seems to do a lot of stories like this. They pick expensive dates/options for Disneyland and cheap dates/options for elsewhere and then barf out an article about how the other thing is "cheaper than Disneyland".

They did one recently where they claimed that one night at the Disneyland Hotel was more expensive than a trip to some resort on the Indian Ocean! Of course, the room that they were referencing at the Disneyland Hotel was the Pirates of the Caribbean Suite on a busy weekend, and the price for the Indian Ocean resort was off-peak value prices. But sure, tEcHnIcAlLy that specific set of circumstances at Disneyland was more expensive than the specific set of circumstances at the other resort.

Same thing here. A specific set of circumstances for a trip to Disneyland Paris is cheaper than a different set of specific circumstances for a trip to Disneyland. Whatever. Not a story at all.

Sure, this is clickbait, but I completely agree with the basic idea of the article. Airfare is making even really far destinations competitive, and you can do a lot in your travel budget for the bloated price of theme park tickets.

Disney is ridiculously expensive. I’m going to fly to Paris and take the train to Disneyland for one day or 2 day tops. That’s enough for me.

It's still cheaper to fly there for me, in South Carolina and spend a week in Paris, than it is for me to drive to WDW to spend a long weekend. Trust me, I did it twice and was shocked at the difference in price.
I was shocked how cheap the hotel rooms are in Orlando. In December we stayed at the Hilton Home 2 Suites at Flamingo Crossing for $79 a night. It was a brand new hotel and very nice. There was zero reason to pay a $1,000 a night to stay on property.

SF Gate has always been a rag. I think William Randolph Hearst invented click bait journalism 100 years ago.

Actually Disneyland botched rolling out the new annual passes by pricing them way too low. Demand was so high they had to stop selling them.

Location, location, location… Flying to Paris for us would be $1500 each! (And that’s not the closest airport, that’s a different one about 3 hours drive away.) Flights to Anaheim (SNA) are $500-600 each (from the actual closest airport). It’s around $200 total in gas (with the higher prices) to drive to Orlando, and that covers multiple people- even with $20/day parking, still cheaper.

We did a trip to the Grand Canyon in October, and it was pretty close in price to a Disney World trip for us once you counted in car rental and flights.

Where are you located? Hotwire is your friend. I'm in SC and our flight AND hotel was $918 for NINE days, each. The next year we did 8 days, flight and hotel, $842. Granted it was November so I expect it would be a few hundred more during peak times. If we had been flying out of a hub it would have been in the 600's! Also, we picked a mid-range hotel. The prices were based on the hotel you picked and how picky you are about the time of day you fly etc....like all Hotwire packages.

That and Dinseyland's onsite properties have always been crazy expensive. I had looked at rates one time around 12-15 years ago and it would have been about the same cost for me to stay on property and go to the parks for a week at WDW as a 3 day trip to Disneyland. So even comparing it amongst themselves it was expensive.

Yeah, ALL of the Disneyland hotels are ridiculously expensive. I'm a big "stay onsite" person when it comes to Disney, but when we went to DL in 2016 the prices scared me offsite. In 2017 we went to DLP and stayed at the Cheyenne, which was reasonably priced (though we did cram 4 adults into one room).

East Tennessee. We care little about the time we fly, but we are limited to school holidays/summer (husband is a teacher). I’ve checked out Hotwire before but it’s never been able to beat direct booking for us.

I think with how the resort is it's also easier to stay offsite at Disneyland. The one time we went my parents were still part of the DVC so we stayed onsite, but if I went now I'd probably stay offsite. some offsite hotels at DL can be within walking distance though so it's not too bad. At WDW when I've stayed offsite sometimes it can be a decent drive and a big hassle to get to the parks still with the size. Have had ones that are up against Disney property an it would still take 40+ minutes to get to the park between distance and traffic. Makes it feel worth it for Disney World to stay onsite, much more relaxing but doesn't really feel necessary at Disneyland.

It's pretty easy to stay offsite at DLP, too. There's a train/RER station right at the Disney Village. They also have more onsite hotels than DL, so can offer more of a range of prices. They're all walkable (aside from Davy Crockett Ranch cabins and Villages Nature), though, which is great.
