- The Florida Department of Environmental Protection will present two Walt Disney World Resorts with its Green Lodgings awards - an honor given to properties that feature innovative and imaginative programs to conserve natural resources, reduce waste, minimize pollution and reduce costs.

At the Boardwalk Resort, the state includes the addition of sensors on all outdoor lighting and bulk chemical purchasing as part of the reason for the award. At the Coronado Springs hotel, officials looked to the use of reclaimed water for irrigation and installation of CO2 sensors in the hotel's large convention space as reasons for the award.

Hey, it's good to see some nice news about Disney for a change! And we all like to see anything that cuts costs without sacrificing quality! :)

OK, someone enlighten me....

Why would they need carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors in the convention space? I can see a use for carbon monoxide (CO) sensors but have no idea how this would relate to Environmental Protection. Can someone explain this?

Good question about the CO2 thing. It could very well be a mistake in their reporting...perhaps a reporter who decided to abbreviate "carbon monoxide" because of limited copy space for the article, but mistakenly chose CO2 as an abbreviation when it's not the same thing. I don't know for sure...I just cut/pasted the news item exactly as I received it in my email inbox.

I've noticed in the past decade or two that many copy errors go to print uncorrected. This happens in all print media, some worse than others, and includes grammatical, syntax, and other blunders. Some common mistakes have made it into the vernacular and are now accepted practice in journalism. The dumbing down of America, I suppose!

Anyway...good eye catching that likely mistake, the CO2 reference. I doubt there's any real CO2 danger to humans in interior convention spaces that a few large, live plants like ficus trees and palms wouldn't correct.

Thanks for posting this, DisNDat. Have you answered the thread regarding what your stage name means? At first I thought Notre Dame, but then I said it aloud. I like it!

Hmmm....I didn't see a thread like that, and I just did a search and couldn't find it. Of course I haven't posted in over a month, as I've been dealing with the death of a loved one and some other challenges. Not on the internet much...so I didn't know anyone was speculating about the mystery person, DisNDat!

Could you please point me the way to that thread? Thanks!

Ok, I did a search and asked What does your name mean? and I got it. I'm trying to paste it here for you:

I hope it works.

no, it's not working, HELP! I tried the search again, but this time didn't get it. It's called something like DVC'ers what does your screen name mean. ohiominnie is the author, I think.

Just the other day I saw an article on the internet that talked about how dangerous CO2 can be. Maybe that's why they have those detectors? It probably has something to do with balancing the air with all the plant life around. Any botanists or evironmental scientists out there who can enlighten us?

Here is the link for that site. It is on snopes.com, a great site for debunking urban legends.

President Pluto,

Thanks for the link to that article...very interesting indeed.

It seems from that article that the biggest danger of CO2 in the U.S. has been in areas where there's a concentration of mining. I don't think there's mining at DVC properties...except of course the mining of our hard-earned cash! Oh my goodness, I can't believe I just said that!!!!!!!!!!!! Tee-hee....
