Hello.
I just recently purchased SSR from Disney. I bought 150 points. I am military and use my vacation benefits a lot through the military, but thought it would be nice to have this as well.
My husband and I have 2 boys (8 and 4) and we hope we made a good judgement call. We went to Disneyland in 2000, all of the DW parks in 2002, and just returned from MK for New Years Eve. We normally stay at the Shades of Green in Disney World. We were lucky enough to read about the friends and family discount and got the -$15 off per point. Was told we couldn't combine with the -$10 a point for SSR being offered. We couldn't afford anymore than 150 points, the military pay wouldn't cover it, ha ha. But, we are planning on using our studio in low times. May buy more down the road.
We are very excited (ok, hubby is worried he will have to spend the rest of his vacation life going to Disney) but we are excited. LOL. I am still in the paperwork signing stage but I have a few questions.
Why on these threads does everyone seem to think it's a bad purchase if you plan on using DVC to stay at other places? For instance, we can stay in Canade for 8 points a night, that sounds great to me.
How do you add the "home" resort picture to your post?
Has anyone stayed in Eastern Canada places or US places with low point cost?
Anyways, I am real excited to be here. Any guidance, suggestions, etc would be appreciated.

Welcome Home Neighboor and thank you for your service to our Country!!!

It is easy to rent points for $11-$12.00+ each. If you multiply the number of points for a trade out (or DCL) X $10.00 a point, you find out that you could pay the cash rate, and have lots of excess cash to spend!

For us once, we booked a 2 Bedroom Villa for Cash (Member's Rate) for a Friday and Saturday, rented the points we would have used out, and had enough to buy our family of 5 park tickets and pay for the cash nights! Same total # of points used, same room, 'free' park tickets.

However, renting can be a hassle, and you have certain resposibilities (like damage/charges) to the room, and it may not be worth your time.

I know a lot of people say you should not trade. It is not a good economical use of points, but I feel as long as you are enjoying your points and making vacation memories then who cares. Just my personal opinion. Enjoy your purchase. Congratulations and Welcome Home!!
