Newbie... Trying to Figure out DVC points

My DH and I just bought over the weekend and I am trying to figure out how to plan our vacation for Christmas. I want to try and book at our home resort next week for our Christmas vacation. Do they already have our points for this year or do we have to wait until our use year for our 2011 points to come in? If I was to call MS will they know that I have 2010, 2011, and plan to borrow 2012 points for this vacation or do I have to wait until April to make my reservations when my use year points come in... I want to be able to book the reservations without going through my guide who sold us the points. Any help will be wonderful...

I'm guessing you bought via resale, but you leave out some necessary information such as did you just sign the documents this weekend or were those the closing documents after passing ROFR? Where are you in the process?

all of your pts for 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 are already in your account. if you look online, you'll see them.

your guide is mostly a salesperson. MS will understand and should be able to walk you through it.

use year has nothing to do with when you can call. you can call 11 months ahead to book your home resort.

It sounds like you just bought from Disney (not re-sale because you mention your guide) which means your points are available now.

What resort did you buy in? There are points charts on line if you type in WDW DVC points chart into your google or yahoo search. If you call at 11 months out you should be able to get in - but sometimes not in the type of room.

For instance - we went this Thanksgiving (which is busy but not as busy as Christmas) we called 11 months out to the day and all the standard view rooms were gone. I had to get a dedicated 2BR lake view. Which was great but I didn't want to spend the extra points on the view when we were in the parks most days.

Ask specific questions and we'll try to answer them. Add what day you want to arrive, what resort, what view, your use year, how many points, etc.

My use year is April. My DH and I bought into VWL with only 78 points. I bought via Disney not resale. Okay if my points are available already how far can I borrow my points?? Will they let me borrow my 2013 points also??? Thank you

here's the basic way to look at it:

your 2011 UY goes from april 1, 2011-mar 31, 2012 - so a dec 2011 trip is in your 2011 UY. easy enough (but remember that a feb 2012 trip would also be in your 2011 UY.)

for a trip in your 2011 UY, you can use banked 2010 pts, current 2011 pts and borrowed 2012 pts.

but you generally cannot borrow more than one year ahead (cruises are sometimes a little different - i can't remember). so your 2013 pts can only be borrowed into your 2012 UY...for stays starting in april 2012. (but you can't book an april 2012 stay at your home resort until may 2011.)

78 seems like an interesting number to me too. I thought Disney only sold directly in increments of 50 until you hit the 160 mark but I guess I am wrong. We bought in at VWL at 100 points last April directly through Disney.

I also believe you can only borrow one year ahead.

Congratulations! Out of curiosity, did you pick those number of points or did Disney?

My guide came up with the numbers for us and that was a perfect amount for us because we don't travel that much due to me having a DD that's in HS and a DH that's married to his job it seems like. So we just wanted something small that will get us in the door.. Oh I do plan on doing some add ons but not until my DD is out of the house and in college.

just for information:

for dec 2011, the OP could use up to 78 x 3 or 234 pts (banked 2010, current 2011 and borrowed 2012).

in that situation, the OP would not get any more pts until 2013 - BUT if the next reservation only used 1 year's worth of pts (78 pts or less), they could borrow the 2013 pts into their 2012 UY for a reservation starting as early as april 1, 2012 - and call on may 1, 2011 to book that reservation at their home resort.
