Forgive me if this isn't the correct place to ask, but... I am interested in renting points from an owner. I am curious what happened to the renters who had contracts to rent with an owner when Disney closed. Was their money refunded? Banked for a future trip? Just out the money (gasp!) or something else? I have actually rented from a well known DVC broker, but trip isn't until December 2020. I just read comment from several unhappy renters of his who were booked during the closing. Obviously, at this point, I am not affected. This group seems like a very safe, informative place for me to cut my teeth. Any and all information/advice would be appreciated. TIA.

There is no one size fits all answer to your question, since they are all technically private transactions between a renter and the DVC Member or broker. And there are several factors in play, like use year of the points, banking window, etc. If the owner was able to bank any points used for the reservation, I would think a full refund was in order, other cases would be maybe the renter losing a deposit, or maybe being able to reschedule for later. That would be a question for the renter to ask before booking a rental, and getting a satisfactory answer in a contract or email.

Make sure you don't respond to any private messages from people offering your their points for rent. That's the way lots of people get scammed. Report any private messages you get offering you a rental to the moderators.

Thank you. So, how does this work then? If I put an inquiry on the owner/renter forum about a certain place, date, type, etc and the owner says PM, you are saying not to do this? How do I find an owner then? TIA

If you initiate contact via a post, then using PM is fine, What you don’t want to do is respond...and then report..any PMs you get from someone who you did not initiate the contact with on the Rent/Trade forum.

Before you post anything at all on the Rent/Trade Board, read all the sticky threads at the top of the page. Otherwise, your post might be kicked off. You respond to a post offering points for rent; you don't post a points needed post. Just read the sticky threads.

Ah, makes sense. You are very kind. This old lady appreciates your help very much!
