Newbie…what are my chances?

Hi! I am a new DVC member and my son has recently begun the college program. Since he won’t be home for Christmas, my family is hoping to visit the weekend before Christmas. There is nothing available anywhere through DVC. I have done a waitlist for two places and I know to stalk the page often for openings. I’m just wondering if there’s really much hope of something opening up that time of year. Can I get the input from some veteran DVC peeps out there?

It's a busy time and there are probably people ahead of you on the wait list. But international guests are cancelling every day due to travel restrictions, so you could see availability open up if that continues. There are also domestic guests who may decide to cancel if they see restrictions change one way or the other here in the States. Just do what you can and maybe something will open up for you. SSR will give you the best chances.
Keep in mind CP's will working more hours. You may have to come on the weekend but during the week would be better for your Childs availability.
At least you will see them a few hours each day.

Stalk the RAT (Resort availability tool) on the member site several times a day every day. If you can afford the points look for 1 br.s at the bigger resorts, SSR, OKW, AKV-Kidani, & BWV. If you find one day grab it and adjust your wait lists to match what you already have, add on as you go. Availability is always changing & w/ Florida dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons lately there may be more movement than usual.

Depending on the status of COVID in November, some folks may start dropping their reservations and something may open up. Other than the COVID years, December is the busiest season.

I think it is important to let people know that using the regular search is not showing availability of the handicap accessible rooms. There is a huge amount of HA rooms curently available systemwide, across most of the rest of the year. Anyone looking for availability should also try checking the HA box after an initil search of non-HA rooms.

As others have said, watch the availability tool but you may have to call member services periodically too. I hadn’t waitlisted in ages until this year. My experience from years ago was that I received an email when my waitlist came through. I thought they said I would receive an email if my most recent waitlists came through. I waitlisted two separate stays for 2022 and only when I called member services did they say my waitlists were available. They didn’t contact me at all and I would never have known if I hadn’t called them. It didn’t show up when I logged in my account before I spoke to them on the phone and they mentioned it in passing.

There is a difference between letting people know to use that feature vs sharing that advice and then following it up with what was actually showing. The posts that I have deleted included information on availability, which we have asked not be shared.

How new? Have you had your Welcome Home booking? If not you might have a chance at something for when you want it. MS was able to help us get Riviera for mid Dec (2 studios)

This is only for direct buyers. But since OP didn’t say, it could be an option to try.
