We may be going to NYC Dec. 7-10. DH on business and us along for the ride. Anyway, we have Fri. Sat and 1/2 of Sun. to sight see. I did a thread search and got a lot of great things to do, see, and places to eat. However, they were all in the context of warmer weather. What can we do in Dec.? I am really excited about skating at Rockafeller Center and the tree, but what else is there? Will it be to cold to ride the ferry or do the Empire St. Building? Whatdayathink? :listen:

Hi! Rockefeller Center is great in December..I'm pretty sure the tree is up then. My 11 yr old son went last year with my mom and he loved that and also Toys R Us and Macy's! You should have a great time. Hope that helps a little :) Btw, I love your picture..where did you find the matching pajamas for everyone?? I've been looking for something like that for my family to take a picture in! Good luck and I hope you have a great time! Barbara

sorry I read your message so fast I didn't see that you had Rockefeller on your list already  as for the Empire State building, our December's are usually not so bad so maybe you'll luck out and be able to go to the Observatory..it really is awesome!

The tree will definetly be up for you.
You can go to about the 60th floor of Rock Center
for the observation deck. It cost about $12.00.

There is the World Of Disney store on Fifth Avenue
your DD may like the American Girl Store on fifth also.

Just bundle up and do whatever you would do in warmer weather, except maybe that picnic in Central Park ;)! Seriously, winter is a great time to do all the wonderful museums, if your family is so inclined. Do a little shopping. 5th Ave. will be all decked out. Maybe see a show. Plenty to do. Enjoy!

I've been to NYC 3x in early December. It's a mob scene in the stores, at the shows and on the sidewalks. Be ready for it. Call ahead for tickets now. Be ready to be patient and with several thousand people doing the same thing you are. I love it or I would not have gone back. I love rock concerts, protests, 4th of July at the D.C. mall. The toy stores all have lines to get in but that's part of the mystique. Have fun!

Rockefeller Center is a must and be sure to catch not only the tree but the music and light show every approx. 1/2 hour.

Stroll the department store windows. Macys, Lord and Taylor, Saks,

See Santa at Macys Herald Square. Santaland

Go Ice Skating or have lunch and watch the ice skaters.

Catch the rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular

See a play, Grinch is there this year!

Grand Central Terminal Holiday Laser Light Show

Take the family to Serendipity3 for a frozen hot chocolate or hot fudge sundae, an experience they will talk about forever. :)

Hit the HUGE toy stores!

That should keep ya busy for awhile. :)

I love NYC at the holidays!! My recommendations are: Rock Center, Trumph Tower, the decorated windows on 5th avenue, Mars2112 (www.mars2112.com), and Carmine's (www.carminesnyc.com, i like the one in the theater district)

Thank you everyone. I am looking forward to it. Haven't made a final decision as to whether or not we will go for sure. I had no idea about the craziness at the stores! I love to go shopping on the day after Thanksgiving, but I don't have DS5 and DD3 in tow. We handle cold weather ok, but I wasn't sure if we would still be able to enjoy everything.

mom2boys77, I ordered them from disneyshopping.com last year. I loved our Christmas pics in these. They have matching sets again this year. Very similar but a little different. Keep a watch out. Sometimes you can catch the adult pj's for @17.99 and the kids for @12.99, then there is always the codes and free shipping. I got all four of ours last year for 52.00 and free shipping!

We dd10 and myself (and about 8 others) have also been to NYC about 3x in the last few years and have done all the "touristy things" as mentioned above . We wanted to see The Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall this year but, we were too late in purchasing our tickets for Dec. 2 ...the day we will be there . Any other ideas for what to see and do in December! Thanks :thumbsup2

Any ideas for a large party to eat...I have heard Carmines is good ...any other fun resturants...not too expensive ! :thumbsup2

I'm jumping on this thread, too. I'm originally from Long Island. Now, my friend and I go up every year the first Friday in December and come home late Saturday. I HIGHLY recommend the Santa in Macy's - we even got our picture with him!! I also second the Disney store- they often have characters out to visit. The American Girl store is amazing. Also, you have to see the window display at Saks and others.
We're trying to decide where to eat this year. Last year, we went to Ellen's Stardust Diner. It was fun- but, we want to try something different this year. Maybe Serendipity... or Carmines.....

The Empire State Building will be FREEZING. If the lines aren't too long then go for it but expect it to be WINDY - you won't want to stay out on the observation deck very long at all.

There are fun decorations all over the city. Check out the toy soldiers on top of Radio City Music Hall - maybe even get tix to see the Christmas show there!

I love NYC in the winter!

santa at macys
tree at rockerfeller center near american girl store
ice skating central park
museum of natural history
walk around park ave......all decorated as well
as madison and fifth.....
Enjoy :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the advice ...as I stated earlier a group of 10 of us will be taking a bus trip from Mass, for the day. We have been the last few years ,so we are looking for something "new" to try ...I'm thinking NOT the usual touristy spots. We are willing to walk or take the subway .Last year we walked from The Statue of Liberty /Battery Park to Cananl St. and then the subway to Rockefeller Center

*Names of a few resturants that we could try .I've been hearing alot about Carmines and a friend at work told me about John's Pizza in a renovated old church. Any other ideas???

*Also,my biggest fear is if it is freezing cold outside or snowing all day . Where could we stay put few at least a few hours to get in ,out of the cold . Any ideas ...is Grand Central Station a good spot for a cold/rainy day or The Museum of Natural History ? Any ideas would be great !!! Thanks Again :thumbsup2

.. Carmines...and Johns pizza..
good choices....
stay away from chain restaurants....tji fridays,etc....
manhattan has awesome food...
try something new :thumbsup2

Just thought I'd ask for any more resturant ideas . I called Carmines and they are booked. How is "Ellen's Stardust" and/or "Playwrights". Any other good resturants that will take ressies for 10 people ,for next Sat. Dec. 2? I don't think John's Pizza" takes reservations...is it worth the wait ,do you think, if we can't get ressies? Any other good resturants in midtown NYC ? THANKS :)

chiming in if I can here: How hard is it to get into restaurants at the last minute? I don't mean the real biggies, of course, but something decent? I am leaving next week for a few days and have the same dilemma.
