New Years Eve Host/Hostess Gift

We are attending a large open house on New Years Eve. It is catered but at a couples home I have never met (DH knows the husband). I want to bring something but am unsure of what. Any ideas? What would you bring in a similar situation?

If you know they drink, I'd bring a bottle of wine (merlot).

If you are not sure, maybe a gift basket filled with chocolates, cookies, etc.....
