New Wedding Favor - Charitable Donation

My best friend's DS is getting married in June. Instead of the "typical" wedding favors - candles, mints, etc. the couple wants to make a donation to a charity in their wedding guests' honor. There will be a card with this info on it at each place setting at the wedding. Apparently it's the new thing to do - have you heard of this? How do you feel about it?

My BFF was looking forward to making up favors and doing lots of the traditional wedding things! I told her at this point that it's such a small thing to let it drop and go with the flow. Not sure how I feel about this new trend (I'm always concerned that the money is not being used as it should - look at the hurricane relief funds!). They have chosen 2 charities (ALS and skin cancer) since close family members have been affected by these diseases - they would split the money between the two. What's your opinion??

I think it's a great idea. Truth be told most wedding favors end up in the trash. I don't need another sack of sugared almonds wrapped in tulle.

I think it's a fine idea. Half the time people just leave the favors on the table anyway. Your friend can make favors for the bridal shower.

Agreed. :thumbsup2

I'd be concerned if the charity was "The Human Fund".

George Costanza tried that one year for Christmas.

I so wish I had thought of this when I got married! I think it is a marvelous idea!! I hope research into the charities has been done to make sure the money goes where it is supposed to go.
Neat idea :thumbsup2

When my BIL got married about 6 yrs ago, this is what they did. The org that they chose was something that had to do with Krohn's disease (this is what his wife had.)

Interesting concept never saw it before, but I guess it is now trendy!

The Make-A-Wish Foundation has an entire program devoted to these donations...it's called Weddings for Wishes, and it's actually really popular. When I volunteered for them, the coordinator of the program had a huge catalog of designs that the couple could choose from for really elegant place cards and different styles and ways to present the donation acknowledgement to match the theme of the wedding. It's a great program...it does seem to be the "new" thing.

My friend and her groom also did part of their donations to a local animal shelter (where they had gotten their dog) in the form of food, toys, beds, etc. for the animals, just to make sure the money didn't disappear. Thought that was a cute idea too!!

Very true. If they are going to spend the money anyway, a charitable donation is a much better idea. After communions, 50th birthdays, sweet sixteens, weddings and graduation parties this past year, I have enough useless party favors to last me a lifetime.

Its not that new of an idea, we did it 9 years ago. It was a little scroll that said a donation would be made in your name to the Jimmy Fund. We felt the same way about favors and this was money well spent and everyone thought it was a great idea!
