New Wave Phones

Just back from the Wonder. We loved the phones, they are large and not easily put in a pocket, but very handy, especially with 2 teenagers on board. The phones vibrate instead of ringing, which is great so others are not bothered with constant ringing but inconvient, always having to check to see if a call is missed. The phones also have texting and if the call is unanswered after about 5 rings then the stateroom phone will ring. Hope this helps!

Thank you so much.....yes it helps. Lots of questions.

So it's like a cell phone? Are they in the room or do you check them out in the kids club? I'm sailing with my DD12. Will she have one and I will have one? From our stateroom? How are they activated?

Thank you robocop :thumbsup2

You will have 2 phones in your room. There was only one charger but the phones held a charge for a really long time. The are more like a cordless phone instead of a cell phone except that you are able to text on them. The phones are free unless you lose one then you will be charged $250.

Yes, it's the old fashioned text using the letters on the key pad, no actual keyboard. Sorry, being on an iPhone for several years made it old fashioned to me. LOL

You will sign a waiver during check-in, $250 cost if you damage or lose it.

The phones are about the size of a house VTech phone, little smaller. They are already in your room, with a single charger. You have to unplug the charger if you want to use the other outlet. Another reason to bring a power strip/extension cord.

There are areas on the ship that would have bad signal and we did have problems getting calls through at times. The phones did work on Castway Cay, somewhat, so that was pretty handy finding folks.

Overall, good to have, RCL has these and we liked them alot there. Just have to be careful leaving them or losing them as it's expensive.

I found a photo on another thread here on the Dis....

This should be cool!! Our 1st cruise we had a party of 16 and we left messages on the stateroom phones and on the boards we hung up on the doors. Of course one of our boards got stolen...

Can you call other phones or just your stateroom party?

Just off the Magic today. Our cruise was the first on that ship to have the new phones. The picture of the phone a couple posts ago is not what is on the Magic. The phone is slimmer and longer.

Only two phones to a room, so DW and I had to do without. DD14 and DD12 took them and used them constantly. They would check in with us periodically, but more importantly, they communicated with their friends. The phones can call any other wave phone, or any phone on ship. Any phone on the ship can also call the wave phones.

Regarding the charger, as someone else mentioned, it takes up its own plug, but is so wide, it covers the other. If you pull the TV out some, there is another outlet behind the TV, so the charger could probably be plugged there. I had brought a power strip, so we were okay.

There are still some technical issues. Many times, messages were not sent. At first, those failed messages showed up in the draft folder, and just needed to be sent again. But later, we just received the notification that the message was not sent, and would have to create the message again. Also, sent messages were not put in the sent message folder for us. Others did not have this issue. We did notice new Firmware was pushed out to the phones a few days into the cruise. At times the phones froze, and the trick was to remove the battery to reset it.

A nice feature would have been to allow contacts to be saved, but that feature on the menu path was turned off. But leave it to the kids, they figured out an alternative. But once the contact was added, there was no way to edit it, or delete it.

Overall, I think everyone thought they were good. Much fewer walkie talkies were seen versus previous cruises. You do have to make the decision if you trust your child with $250. I was walking up the stairs and found a room key. Someone coming down, found a phone. We weren't sure if the same person lost them both, but we returned them to guest services. And on Castaway Cay, the folks next to us asked if we brought our phones. We had not, and they mentioned they found one in the sand. When the said the room number (all phones have the phone number of the stateroom followed by either 1 or 2) it was from a friend of our DD's who was at the beach with us. Another catastrophe averted. The good news is the phones are useless when not cruising, so I would guess most lost phones would be turned in.
