My husband, Uncleromulus, just told me about this board on the Dis Forum and I'm so excited! My name is Kathy.

I have just gotten into photography and love my S5 (Canon) -- I'm still learning all the functions. This weekend, I also bought a good, sturdy, portable tripod to take with me when we go to Disney the last week of September.

I've been looking at some of the terrific photos on this site. Does anyone have any tips for photographing fireworks in Disney?

We are taking the Wishes celebration cruise, and I'm guessing that it will be too unsteady in the boat to take any good fireworks photos from there, but if you have any input about settings for the camera, etc. for such a venue, I'd be appreciative!

Welcome to the board! There are a bunch of great people here that will help you get on your way with that S5. For the fireworks question, see this thread:

I hope you get the most out of your camera with the help of this board and be sure to share pics whenever you want!

Hi Kathy: Welcome!
I've enjoyed Uncleromulus' posts on the Dining Board...
Eating and photography! What could be better?

The S5 will take great pics on a ship or photographing fireworks from a ship and at Disney, really almost any situation if you know how to use the manual settings. The scene modes also work well (there is even a fireworks setting). Three weeks isn't enough time to learn everything but my advice would be to practice using different settings and experiment with the scene modes (on the dial and in 'scene') and using Av, Tv, P modes, etc. and ask questions in a Canon S5 forum such as

or
www.s5users.com/forum

After you feel comfortable with the camera and it's settings, you should look at installing a program called "CHDK" -

even if you don't want or feel you need the extra functions, the battery indicator is very useful

Welcome aboard Kathy.

Be sure to post lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of pictures.

We really like pictures. ::yes::

Welcome to the board Kathy, I've also got an S5 (purchased mine in May) and have been practicing for my trip in a little under three weeks also. I think I've started getting a good handle on the camera, the only thing I haven't really been able to practice on is Fireworks.

You should be able to use the fireworks mode while on a tripod because it keeps the shutter open a little longer. Also depending on the type of firework picture you want, you could also use sport mode with continuous shooting then delete the ones you don't want.

Have fun, and get out there around your house and practice as much as you can.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome, and especially for the links for further info! You can bet I'll be playing with the camera and reading the links.

I did get some nice photos at an Orioles and a pre-season
Ravens game the past few weeks. I used the sports setting and that helped a lot.

I'm determined to get some good fireworks shots, and if I do, I'll share them!

KATHY
