I recently purchased a small pt pkg via resale at OKW. What is the location of OKW to the parks? I believe this is considered one of the "larger" locations - is it hard to get ressies there? :confused3 I was considering adding on at Vero because pts are cheaper but the dues were more, so then I started looking at more points at OKW. I am still up in the air abt what to do - then I read the big debt going on with boatboatboat and I'm starting to get chills in my feet. Can someone warm them for me?

Welcome home!

OKW is a great resort...they all are! You won't be unhappy with any of the DVC resorts if you bought them to be at WDW! Everyone has their own opinions, some are more vocal than others about their opinions on location of a resort, bedspread designs, etc.

Don't let the folks that yell their opinions color yours. Make your own pixie dust! :wizard:

Every persons situation is unique to them . You need to see what is right for you. You need to see how you vacation and how you may vacation in the future, so you can assess how many points you need and where you like staying. Vero is very costly after you purchase because of the high yearly fees. OKW is a very nice resort and you take buses to all the parks or your car. They also have a new pool slide that looks great. Adding there would also be good because you can book your home resort at 11 months out. You would want to try to match up your use year also, if possible.

Unfortunately, the more negative posters also tend to be more vocal. Don't be swayed. Everyone I know that has purchased DVC has expressed only one regret, and that is that they hadn't purchased it sooner.

The punishment for continual slamming of one of the DVC resorts should be banishment to a night at the Masters Inn. :rotfl2:

What I don't understand is that you bought OKW and don't know where its located?? Location to the theme parks is by bus. I've heard that its a great resort and the owners love it there. But are you trying to buy into DVC at a lower cost to stay at other resorts? As the system gets more members it will get increasingly harder to make a ressie at 7 months. So as most OPS will say, "Buy where you want to stay.".......

Lots of people like OKW. Just ask Greenban who's is working hard to accumulate enough points to winter there when he retires.

As for where it's located, you can look at the maps that Willicad has online at http://www.willcad.org/disney_maps.html. Look at the Disney transportation map at the bottom of the page. It is old enough that it doesn't show SSR. There is a more recent map of OKW too.

What "big debt going on with boatboatboat?" Are you talking about the boat to DTD, why is it in debt? Hard for a new guy to follow this code.

Oh, debate, that makes a little more sense. Still getting used to the board code. I don't think I've seen any boatboatboat posts.

:

totally agree

OKW is a lovely, lovely resort. We've stayed there twice and I would love to add points there in the future. The villas are large and pretty, and the landscaping is lush and tropical. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea (especially if you prefer a "hotel-type" atmosphere) but it has a *ton* of loyal fans on this board. Stay there once and I'm sure you'll understand why! :)

They are just jealous you have 12 more years. They should just pipe down and be happy they can go to walt disney world. Who cares if you don't get to stay at your choice of resorts and have to stay at SSR. SSR is still a pretty nice place.

Right on! This 12 year stuff has me on the edge of adding on. :teeth: I want 12 more years of the "magic". My BCV purchase looks a little dumb now. I should have found these boards before the purchase. Oh well, 12 years and being that close to Pucks just might sway me. Tons of great SSR reviews here as well. I gotta work on wifey with this. She's the brains in the family. :thumbsup2

The two places i hope to buy points at are BCV and OKW. (DH requires more brainwashing)
BCV for the pool, OKW for the large rooms and low points. Just step into OKW and i relax at the spaciousness.
Do a couple trips and enjoy before changing anything.
All the other resorts sound wonderful but those are the two i have stayed at and the ones i would like to own at.

I own at BWV, I stay at OKW a lot though. We like it there, very relaxed. The CM there seen to be very freindly.

Sorry, when I was Orlando many years ago (when OKW was the original DVC),
I fell in love with it. That's why I chose it. I haven't been back to OKW since then (I visited SSR a few weeks ago). I know Disney has a reputation for maintaining their properties so I wasn't concerned about OKW being a bad choice. I thought perhaps it somehow got a new transportation system since then. I do prefer the slower pace and my kids are old enough to use Disney tranportation themselves (17 & 19). I meant to question how long it takes to get to the parks (especially the water parks). Thanks for the response.

Welcome to the DIS :)

You came to the right place to learn about DVC. Many of the regulars started here when they first started considering DVC. There are many threads to read that will help you out. Here is one that may help get you started.

Factual List of Home Resort Pros and Cons

Thanks for the informational thread. It helped. As of now, I do want to consider OKW home (since it was my "first love") and I plan on utilizing it.
But I'm sure my family will (on occasion) want to try something different.
I am dealing with the re-sale end (since I was having problems getting a
response from my guide in Disney - she hasn't answered my calls in 2 weeks.)
Would you suggest buy smaller point packages at different places or keeping my eggs in one basket? I often do last minute trips since my husb and I own our own business and the kids are older. How is it getting in to a DVC on a last minute ressie?

I want to thank everyone for helping to inform me during my initiation.

I suggest you buy contracts where you want to stay the most for the 11 month advantage. If 11 month booking is not important buy where the cost to own is the least. That is primarily the lowest maintenance fees (SSR and OKW). SSR gets the advantage for 12 extra years of membership which also may be important to you. VB low resale buy-in is probably offset in a decade or so in much higher maintenance fees.

We own at BCV to have 11 month booking window for early December. We have booked DVC on short notice, but you need to be flexible as to where and type of villa. Time of year is also important. Some times will be really difficult and others not so bad. The seasons can be some guide. But they can also mislead. Early December and January are both Adventure seasons at WDW DVC resorts. I suspect there is a significant difference in demand for the two -- much higher in early December than January.

We have been to all, but HH. Each one has been great fun. Enjoy :)

First off, I want to say :welcome:

I wouldn't worry about it. OKW is a lovely resort! It has a very layed back feel, lush tropical grounds, and my son loves the pool! We almost bought there, but decided on SSR when they had the F&F deal going on, mostly for the extra 12 years! Truly, I would like to have pts. at a few of the other resorts for the booking advantage. They are all great and have something unique to offer! Don't let a few of these negative posters get you down! It is usually the same few and they are very vocal about there dislikes, which they are entitled to.

We have also used the buses there and some took a little longer that others. We usually have a car, but sometimes we just don't want to hassle with the traffic and it is nice to have the options.

I also want to add, that last year before I bought DVC, I rented from someone who owned at OKW. I booked my stay for the summer in May for OKW & BWV. My point being there was availbility at both places 3 months out.

Steph :goodvibes
