Hi,

I am new to photography. Just got gifted a Canon SL1. I have found the threads and posts that include the settings used for taking a photo very helpful for me as I am learning. So, I thought I would start a new thread inviting fellow Disers to post photos along with the settings used to take it (For those with a dSLR, please include your ISO, aperture and shutter speed).

As far as topic, really anything goes, but being a Disney lover, I especially appreciate ones taken at DL or WDW. The more kinds of photos, the more helpful for me. Thanks!

Also, if there are already threads like this (I found one of the fireworks photo threads helpful) please feel free to share!:)

My suggestion would be to go to Flickr and browse photos there. It's going to be much easier and will get a better response (so to speak) than requesting everyone repost their photos in this thread.

You can find my photos here: http://flickr.com/tombricker/ EXIF data is there for each photo.

Good luck! :)

Ditto what Tom said!

But here is one of mine that links back to Flickr:

Thing is... Aperture, shutter speed and ISO really tell you very little.

Aperture of 5.6 will look totally different at a 16mm focal length than a 200mm focal length.

ISO of 800.... Will look different depending on the camera, the sensor size, the quality of the post processing.

And say you have the perfect picture of the Castle taken at 5.6/ISO 200/ 1/200 shutter. Does that mean replicating those settings will give you the same shot? Nope... Depends on how cloudy, day vs night, etc.
and of course, if you're using image stabilization, you can get away with entirely different shutter speed than without.
And shooting with a tripod.. Or ND filter... Game changers.

Not to mention, what type of post processing? Merge images into HDR? Save the highlights in Lightroom?

A/S/ISO actually tell you very little.

Hmmm...you make some good points. May be why this is a bit more helpful on something like a fireworks photo thread since all those photos would be at night...

You'll probably learn a lot more by posting photos you take that didn't come out right with the EXIF data and figuring out why they came up short technically. Mainly because there are so many different approaches to making an image that just knowing the settings someone else used isn't usually enough. Don't get me wrong, it's great to look at others for inspiration. However, it's not always the best tool for learning what settings to use when.
