New to ebay--checking account to sell?

I want to put a few items on ebay. I have 52 positives as buyer.
I went to set up an account and it asks for credit card for fees and
for checking account. I am terrified of someone getting this info having had
a relative lose thousands. I know that credit cards are protected, but checking
isn't.
Is this typical or did I go to a bogus site?

eBay requires a credit card or checking account from their sellers so that they have some place to charge your listing and final value fees. Those charges are billed at the end of each month. If eBay did not have a valid credit card number or bank account, the possibility exists that someone could list items for sale, collect their money and disappear from cyberspace before eBay could invoice them.

The function makes great sense, I just don't understand that they need checking and credit card both.

Several years ago I opened an additional Savings account for PayPal use only at the same bank where I had other accounts. I tend to keep about $100 in it. When I sweep money from PayPal it goes into this account. I will then transfer it to another account at the bank. Likewise if I have to add to my PayPal account the money comes from this special account. In the event anyone manages to hack into PayPal and find my bank information they will only find this tiny acocunt.

Just because someone got your checking account info. does not mean you lose thousands. Every time you pay by check, your checking account info. goes out the recipient. Every transaction and withdrawal has to be authorized by you otherwise the bank has to put the money back into the account.

Read the rules for eBay or whomever else you might give your checking account to for automatic withdrawals first, before doing it. Sometimes when doing things on line you authorize in advance multiple withdrawals to be done at different times.
