New To DVC...Reservation Change Policy?

Now, I forget how this works. I have another reservation with my points made for the last week of October. If I decide not to go that week. Can I just cancel and have the points go back to my account? And is there any penalty?

Depends, did you borrow the points. If you did, they stay in the use year you borrowed them into and would expire at the end of that use year.

If not borrowed, as long as you cancel 31 days prior they return to the current use year.

It depends...

If you are 30 days or closer to your check-in date, when you cancel a reservation, the points from that reservation will go into a holding account. There are restrictions on how you can use points in holding, and they cannot be banked.

If you cancel more than 30 days from check-in, the points will go back into the use year in which the reservation fell. If you had banked or borrowed points to make the resevation, they cannot be returned to the original year.

Banking is only available during the first 8 months of your use year. After that time, points can no longer be banked and must be used before the end of the use year or they expire.

However, there is a special exception for a new purchase directly from Disney. If they give you current year points and you are past the banking deadline when you make the purchase, they will allow you to bank them.

What's your use year? When did you make the purchase? Did you buy resale or directly from Disney?

I know it sounds complicated, but...as long as the points are current use years points, and you cancel 31 or more days prior to check-in date, you can bank the points, as long as you are within the banking window for your use year.

What is your use year? That will determine if your points banked from your 2010 use year can be used for a May 2012 vacation.

If you have a February, March or April use year, 2010 points banked into 2011 could not be used for a May 2012 trip. The points would expire before then.

If your use year is June, August, September, October, or December, then the banked 2010points could be used for the May 2012 trip.
