Ok I feel like kind of a goof writing a post to announce another post but I thought maybe I should explain.

KimAshton began a thread asking for recommendations for a tripod. I kind of hijacked that thread (sorry Kim) as we started talking about equipment recommendations and how it is sometimes difficult to find a thread when you are looking for comments on suggestions before buying a new piece of equipment. Instead of having a million sticky threads for each type of recommendation, I have created a single stuck thread called Equipment Recommendations where we can post links to other threads that discuss suggestions for other equipment. As always I took the easy part and created the sticky thread. What I am asking each of you to do is to find threads that you think should be included in that post. I'll add the links to the stuck message and we can begin building a reference that hopefully will help everyone find what they are looking for quickly and easily.

We can do something similar for shooting techniques such as low-light photography, fireworks, macro photography, etc. if you think that might be helpful.

I like both thread ideas. Should we post to the sticky or PM you the thread links that we think should go in it?

Jeff,

I think that is a good idea, but I think it should be locked and you add the links, so that it stays clean. I would also suggest adding in the standard review sites that are offered to most folks looking for suggestions such as steves or dpreview.

Excellent idea Jeff. Also the addition of a few other stickys especially for fireworks and other night shots (like spectro as that seems to be coming up quite a bit lately).

I also kinda lean towards Master Mason's suggestion of it being locked, but wouldn't be upset if it weren't.

I think a Night shot sticky should be locked. Though how exactly should we go about creating it. Should we come up, as a group, with the basic "instructions". ie: fireworks with and without tripod, Spectro, then all other night still shots both with and without tripod... ?? I know myself and quite a few others have writen this stuff out so many times that we probably say it in our sleep :teeth: . I keep forgetting to copy and paste my info into a word doc so that I can just copy it from there then paste it here when people have questions.

ok I'm rambling,,, thanks again Jeff!!! :thumbsup2

First off, thanks for the thread, Jeff!

I like the idea of it not being locked, so it's easier for us to suggest threads, and it puts less of the burden on the moderator to keep the thread current... which is always the hardest thing about such "index" threads.

I also think it might be a good idea to make it more of a general "common topics" thread (like the DVC board's "ongoing discussion topics") rather than just equipment recommendations. Inside that post, it could then be broken down into section (separated by boldface topics) that have the links. This cuts down on the number of stickies and the number of pages we have to look at (and I'm sure I'm not the only one who's found the site running very slow lately, I'm probably skipping some threads I might like because it takes so long for them to come up).

So for example, the thread title could be "Ongoing photography discussions topics", and inside, it could look something like:
Equipment recommendations
Tripods
Looking for cheap digital camera
Filters?
Which DSLR?
What lenses to take?
What memory card?
What bag?

Tips and common problems
My low-light pictures look lousy
How do I stop blur?
Everyone's yellow indoors if I don't use the flash
How do I do good fireworks photo
SpectroMagic
Flash tutorial
Best angle for Tree of Life

Camcorders
High-def camcorder?
Hard drive, mini-DVD, or tape camcorder?
What rides can I videotape?

"Show me" topics
...motion blur
...macro
...spring
...other vacation spots
The Image Below Me is...
Who/What/Where

That'd be my suggestion. Thoughts, anyone?

I think that this issue was what has inspired the occasional talk of a wiki... which Barrie created but unfortunately didn't get much response.

If I thought that I could get some help, I'd be willing to set up a Disney photography-specific site with a Wiki on there...

For right now I locked the thread until we can decide as a group whether we want it to remain open or closed. Let's start with the equipment threads of what we feel should be linked. Once we get that one rolling we can either add another post with links for other things such as low-light, white balance, image work flow, etc.

At this point you can contact me with threads that you think should be included in the equipment recommendations. You can post links the links here, you can PM me, or you can email me whatever is your preference. I'll add them as appropriate.

Let's not get too specific like I don't think we need a thread for every make and model of camera. I was thinking we should include
  • Point and Shoot Camera Recommendations
  • SLR Recommendations
  • Tripods/Monopods
  • Camera Bags
  • Lenses
These seem to get asked a lot. If there are review sites you feel like should be included let me know that too and we can add those to the thread too.

Jeff

So does anyone have a candidate or recommendation for what threads should be linked within the Equipment Recommendations?
