New Soarin as good or better then the original, or is it just different?

Oh good grief. I'm not allowed to have an opinion on which I liked better? You totally missed the point of this discussion.

BTW, when looking at the polar bears reminds you of the old Coke commercials, it's not "done spectacularly".
Well, I disagree. It was done spectacularly, in my opinion, which is just as legitimate as yours, Thanks.

So what is the point of the discussion? Is it that Disney sometimes creates things that aren't real, because frankly, that wouldn't be much of a news flash. Or is it that we should demand that everything we see there be absolutely as it happened with no help from Disney, because the that would eliminate most of the parks and cause forced perspective to be thrown out.

No, I just am getting so tired of what people expect from their fantasy situations. Nothing seems to be good for them. Don't put in the Polar Bears because they aren't real. Don't have the whale because it isn't really happening. Don't have the elephant spray the dirt because it really didn't do that... duh! Instead lets have just a complete non-transition from one scene to another like the old one did. Why? I don't know! Perhaps it was just because we are unable to recognize creative artistry or just unable to accept change. Either one is bogus. You can like one better then the other, but, I would be hard pressed to figure out why the reasons listed are valid. Just like it if you like, but, don't create a problem that doesn't exist to justify it.

I think the point was to have a civilized discussion about it, which is a point you seemed to have missed based on your condescending tone.

I have to agree that the movie was way too much CGI. I thought they were trying to force the effects on you instead of letting them flow naturally. I was very disappointed.

Also, everything was crooked in the movie. The Eiffel Tower looked like it was leaning over!

We saw the new version twice at DCA earlier this month. The first time we were top row far far left. The bend of the castle and the Eiffel tower and just about everything else was JUST AWFUL. Really , unless you are sitting directly in the middle,I think it sucks. I can not get past the bend of the buildings. the Eiffel tower was almost bent in half. Its ridiculous.

We rode a second time and waited for middle. It was definitely better in the middle. But I still prefer the old version.

Advice: wait for a middle seat- and I mean middle of the middle ( not right middle or left middle) MIDDLE MIDDLE! LOL

Also, I was not crazy about the CGI. it just looks fake. And I know that all of Disney is make believe and fake. But the old film seemed very real and you felt like you were flying. Not so much anymore. Old version we would sometimes try and ride three times ( paper FP days). This month at DCA, which is currently still paper FP, we had no desire to ride it again...It went from my favorite ride to just "Meh..."

DW and I got to ride the new Soarin' this morning. We had mixed feelings. DW definitely preferred the old version. She said it was much more realistic. She didn't like the transitions in the new movie. She was not interested in riding it a second time. I was more neutral. I didn't appreciate the CGI in the new scenes. As others have noted there are so many wonderful real views why use so much CGI. But I would ride again. But if I had a choice I would chose to ride with the old version.

LOL

My son thought that was the leaning tower of Pisa. I kid you not...
When I told him it was the Eiffel Tower he asked why it was so bent.

Then he asked me why they would have fireworks in the EPCOT parking lot.

To me, the new movie is a huge missed opportunity. It's not horrendous... But honestly if they just cleaned up the old film I would much prefer the original version.

The old film did not actually need to be cleaned up.

To be clear, the old "classic" Soarin' Over California version was not dirty.
The old PRINTS (copies of) the film were dirty.

The master (original edited negative) of the film was fine.
But, the physical copies of the film (the "prints") they were showing in the theaters were dirty.

All of the Soarin' theaters now use digital projectors and don't use a film print at all.
No physical film to get dirty.

And, they DO HAVE the classic Soarin', fully clean and clear, in the new digital format that they have shown (and can show again) in the theaters.
(Earlier this year, they ran the classic version (digital clean and clear) for several weeks at WDW before switching to the new version.)

In fact, they could set up any of the theaters to be able to change the presentation and physical effects (how the seats move) with just a few computer keystrokes if they wanted to show the original presentation at any time.

(What they cannot "instantly" do is change the "smells" of the shows as that requires loading different physical "perfumes" (scents)
into the apparatus that sprays the aromas to the guests.)

I enjoyed both, but I prefer the new one.

It is just nice to see some new sights (even if they are not real). I also adore the new smells. The one we get while flying over the ocean is wonderful, but I could surround myself all day in the one we get with the Taj Mahal. It is very much like the scent on Kali River Rapids (so not the wet people and rubber scent but the jasmine and sandalwood scent).

The fact that some of the scenes are CGI doesn't bother me at all. I go to Disney to escape reality- not to immerse myself in it.

I tend to prefer fantasy to reality. That is why I am so passionate about WDW.

Lol, isn't the entirety of Epcot and World Showcase based on "faking it" and for that matter ALL things Disney???

Yes.
However, most of the other "fake" things that Disney does look better in context.

In the context of actual fly-over footage of Soarin', the CGI animation looks out-of-place.

He moved into Expedition Everest, and now refuses to move again.

;)

Hello hello baby sorry I can't move a thing
I haven't been serviced a while see see
But but but it's OK there's a flashing light on me
Sorry if you wanted more it's only Disney

It's only Disney
It's only Disney
What more than a strobe would you expect at Disney?

Disco Yeti is my name this mountain's where I stay
I used to be ferocious now I'm just a display
They said they had some plans for me they'd put me on TV
Then they hung me on the wall like Mickey's hunting trophy

Stopped moving, not proving Disney's expertise anymore
Imagineers build what engineers ignore
Bob Iger's got tigers, rhinos, and giraffes by the score
So what's he need a working mythical beast for?

he he he he I'm Disco Yeti
he he he he come fix me

So ride if you want but there's no more motion
You're just going to find a mannequin
Been fried since they ended my promotion
Left me behind a mannequin
More meets and greets and some brand new suites
So that no one will mind the mannequin
'Cause I'm stuck up above and I'm getting no love
An expensive kind of mannequin

In my opinion, worse. It's all fake. Some entire locations are all digital, and to me it's super obvious and takes me out of the ride. The world is full of enough marvelous sights that disney didn't have to fake it.

Yep to that! We ride it 3 times on our trip last week - you can see the cgi is fake at times - the Taj Mahal for example. The animals. Just didn't seem real like the original

Also if you don't sit in the center aisle you can see the curve of the projector which takes Away from the effect.

My family was disappointed, had high expectations.

Personally, I felt it was very disjointed and a bit too slick as to the CGI.

For a moment I thought there might be a polar bear/coca cola merchandise tie-in

I did watch the pre show and caught the locales to which we'd be Soarin, just thought it odd how they criss crossed the globe instead of a more orderly progression.:confused3

The old Soarin is a classic.
The new Soarin, while you can point out the CGI... it still is an enjoyable experience.

Overall, I personally enjoy both versions and would love to have both be shown.

What is GCI

A good example is Jurassic Park. That movie uses Computer Generated Dinosaurs instead of filming the actors running from real dinosaurs. It's much cheaper to use computer generated animals than real ones. It would be tough for Disney to have had a whale jump at the right moment for their video, so they just drew a picture of one with a computer.

It's different.... We liked it but we felt like many others in that the CGI and the sudden transitions made us long for the old version. When we rode it the first time we were on the far right side of the theater and we saw that bend in the buildings, it throws off the whole feeling of Soarin'. The second time we were in the middle, it was much better. We did enjoy the new smells but missed the old ones. I think we will always miss the original but we will continue to ride this at least once a trip.
