It is from the website. I think this is great but I am not sure that my smoking friends would agree.

New Smoke-Free Policy
All Walt Disney World® Resorts, including Disney Vacation Club Resorts, will become smoke-free on June 1, 2007. During the past five years Guest demand for smoking rooms has been declining steadily. Currently, less than 3.5 percent of Walt Disney World's 24,000 resort rooms are smoking optional.

The new policy applies to all guest rooms, patios, and balconies, and designates outdoor smoking areas at all resorts affected by the change. Smoking is currently prohibited in all lobbies, restaurants, and convention spaces. This policy will allow us to better accommodate the large numbers of Members who request non-smoking accommodations and complements our efforts to provide our Guests with the healthy living options they are requesting.

Oh my. popcorn::

Interesting. Let the rejoicing & concerns begin!

Any bets on the over/under on the page count of this thread? :rolleyes1

I just read that on the website and was shocked and jumped onto the boards here to read the reactions. Wow! :)

I'm trying to think of something to say which won't offend smokers. I'm pleased in a healthy sort of non smoker way by this decision....how is that?

Yes, thanks Disney. Smart and well informed decision!:thumbsup2

:yay:

I'm happy, but not surprised. Now to enforce it.....

And what to do about people who go ahead and smoke in their rooms anyway.

It's going to be difficult for this thread not to turn into another smoking debate. I'll just leave it at I'm glad that I have one less request to make for each reservation. :)

From knowing people who did this..........
Smokers request non smoking rooms in general as they can not stand the smell of smoke... But most of these will only smoke on the balcony anyway which would not leave any smell in the room...
I have been to some smoke free hotels that smell like :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: :smokin: and then some
I also know people who got fined from the hotel for smoking after they checked out via mail
will Disney enforce?????

As a non-smoker, it is easy to feel happy about this decision. At first. But then I started thinking, while most smokers I'm sure will follow the rule (not happily for many I'm sure) there are some who may not. Now there is NO choice for a smoker to get a smoking room. So it seems to me that INCREASES the chance that you could get a non-smoking room that has been smoked in.
Does this make sense?
I wish everyone could stop, for thier own health.
Tammy

I bet this change also lowers Disney's insurance alot! Hopefully saving us, Owners! I would think there would be a penalty fee posted somewhere, I don't remember where I was(non-disney), but saw a sign that if you smoked inthe hotel room, it was a 200.00 penalty charged directly on your credit card. ouch!

Makes perfect sense and your concerns are valid. It would be up to Disney to enforce penalties for smoking or word will quickly get around that this is simply another "suggestion" rather than a hard & fast rule. On a positive note, one doesn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to detect when a room has been smoked in, so it won't be difficult to ID the culprits!

For me, part of my DVC decision process has been thinking that buying a few extra points would allow me to bring relatives along with us every other year. But I'm not sure if any of my relatives who are smokers (every last one of them polite, considerate people!) would feel comfortable at WDW after this decision. But DVC was going to be my way to reconnect with family. :sad1:

Dinsey will make areas for them to smoke....
I think as an EX smoker this is a good thing as it will make people smoke less hopefully...
I do not think that them having to walk a few feet should impact them going but?????
But I am sure they will choose being with thier family over smoking in the room
And all of you..... smokers or not will be able to sleep better and breath better when you are in the room
Just explain it as a positive and not a you can't do this... this will make them want to quit :lmao:

Not surprised, not shocked. Any smoker who currently holds out hope that they will be able to smoke indoors at public locations (and yes, a hotel room is a public location that has privacy) is kidding themselves. It is only a matter of time (short amount of time) before all public locations are effectively smoke free.

Remember when your neighbor at work could smoke? Try finding an office building that allows smoking.

Remember when you could smoke on a plane? Try that now.

Bars, restaurants, hotels - all going this route.

I don't think Disney will see any backlash from this and I don't think they'll have much problem enforcing it.

Chris
