Magic, Wonder to get company

Disney Cruise Line's long-awaited effort to add a third boat to its fleet appears to be on track after sitting on the back burner for nearly two years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Talk on the street is that Disney has put out requests for bids to build a sister ship to go with Magic and Wonder, both of which were launched in the late '90s. No word on who the leading contender might be for the project. The home port for the next ship also is yet to be determined. Port Canaveral folks seem ready to woo Disney with an attractive deal. Disney officials would not confirm or deny the "speculation."

All I can say is go DCL and GO Port Canaveral! Ten day cruises anyone? :)

Cool! I hope it's called Disney Dreams!

Hi,

when we booked our 2004 cruise Donna, the onboard sales director told me that this was in fact true. That Disney has settled on a design for the ship and that is different than the Wonder and the Magic. She reinforced that Disney has put of for bid the job of building the ship.

Did you notice on your customer satisfaction survey form that DCL was asking about other possible destinations? Has the form always asked that?

I think Alaska was a choice, and that would certainly need to be a ten day cruise!!!!

thanks for the news

Alaska would be great but it wont be built in time for our trip next year. However a Disney Alaska cruise might just get me back to Alaska:p

Max123--

The question about possible new destinations is new from what I recall. At least I don't recall it being on our May comment card and definitely not on our November one.

That's some of the best news I've heard in awhile! I was really looking forward to a new ship!! We were on the May 10, 2003 cruise and we got that question on our survey. That was too hard to answer, I pretty much wrote that we would probably go on any cruise destination that they decided on!

Thanks for the update!

I'm with tstobb. While this is encouraging news, I've been hearing about the "third ship" for almost three years now. I'll believe it when some shipyard makes an announcement that they're building a ship for DCL. The pessimist in me says that we won't see a new DCL ship before 2006.

Donna, on board the Magic told us that once they find a shipyard to build the 3rd ship, it will be at least 2 years before it is ready to sail. Something to look forward to anyway.

I've done very well in life being a pessimist.

I'll believe it when the keel is laid.

Having said this, If you combine (1) the different ship design and (2) survey questions you can come up with a west coast location sailing in cold rather than warm waters.

Can't get excited. Won't get excited. Can't get excited. Won't get excited. Can't get excited. Won't get excited. Can't get excited. Won't get excited. Can't get excited. Won't get excited. Me either.

But I'm excited.

(We have been planning a cruise to alaska in 2005-2006.)

This is so strange...DH and I just got home from a vacation in Europe. When we were in Venice the tour guide pointed out the shipyard where many cruise ships are built. DH and I both looked at each other and said, "I wonder if they are building the new Disney ship?" Weren't the Wonder and Magic built in Italy???

I vote for Alaska too if Mickey is listening!

I vote for NY in the summer and Ca. in the winter months.

A Bermuda or Carribean cruise out of NY, a Mexican cruise out of California.

Sounds fair to me.

Joanna, I'm a New Yorker, too. I would love a Disney cruise from NY, But I have to say, I would prefer Alaska. I have never been there and I am not too fond of other cruise lines and their children's programs. And I rarely travel without my kids. So, I would vote for Alaska. Let's see, the bid is out there..2 yrs to build...so we're talking 3 yrs. Gives me plenty of time to save!!

What we heard on our May cruise was that a new ship will definately be designed with Alaska in mind. While both the Wonder and Magic are designed to fit through the Panama Canal and could go to the West Coast, they aren't designed for cold weather sailing like many of the ships that currently go to Alaska. Decks 9 & 10 need to be covered more so the pool area can be heated and still used while sailing up there.

What we also heard was that they were just waiting for the dollar to stabalize more with the Euro.

We're looking at Alaska for 2006 and would love for it to be on Disney!

Please, oh, please, oh, please be true!

My husband and I have been looking at other lines for our next cruise (Alaska). We just can't commit to any because we're spoiled by Disney. It's just in a class by itself!

Disney, IF YOU BUILD IT WE WILL COME!

I gotta tell ya, this thread has me PUMPED!!

Ursula

I wonder if Disney would offer Alaska Resident Rates like they do for Florida residents. *crossing fingers* :)

If I remember correctly, there was talk circulating last year about a Mediterranean cruise, sailing from somewhere in Europe, I think. that would be WAY out of my price range!! I could handle Alaska, tho..my FH and I have always wanted to go there...:p
