New rides - motion sickness?

Our last Disney trip was to WDW in November 2019. I decided to skip MF at that time because I was nervous about motion sickness.

ROTR and WS will be new to us this trip. I'm guessing that I'll have to skip both of them. But in case we are able to get BG's for these attractions, can anyone tell me what they are like in terms of motion sickness?

For reference, I cannot do Star Tours, IJ or SM. I tried Flight of Passage and my body went into shock...tears, numbs, shaking. I can do outdoor roller coasters when I can see the track, like BTMR and Slinky. But I don't really like them and can't wait to get off.

If anyone has any recommendations for ROTR and WS, please let me know! I'll probably skip them because it's just not worth getting so sick and ruining my day. But I would appreciate any input.

Thanks!

I can't speak for WEB Slingers, but ROTR isn't too bad. The ride has a few portions - in the first section you stand on a starcruiser and there are windows showing all motion. If you don't look you won't notice. The next portion involves a trackless ride vehicle, like at Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway. It does move around fairly quickly, but is not terribly jerky. There are parts where it is combined with screens and a "drop" though I am not 100% how much of it is actual motion and how much is the screen (sort of an "all around " projection). If you closed your eyes during thos portions, I don't think you would feel the motion as much.

WS doesn't look like it moves around too much. I bet it is like Avatar: Flight of Passage or even Soarin' where the motion of the vehicle of more subtle, maybe some shaking (vibrations), but that most of the "motion" comes from being surrounded by the screen projection. It does not appear to move as much as the Spider-Man ride at Universal Orlando.

Hope that helps!

I get motion sickness on rides you mentioned, and also Incredicoaster (that one kills me!). ROTR does not bother me.

WS moves very much like Toy story in DCA. So if you are able to handle that ride you would be fine on WS.

ROTR the ride vehicles are very smooth moving. They start and stop often. They turn around a few times but I never felt like I was spinning. I don’t like the tea cups because of the spinning but that was not an issue with Rise. Like PP said there is one drop near the end that feels like a very light GOTG type drop but much less.

We have a few rides in common there and no problem for me on ROTR. The motion simulator screens are what gets me, if not flawlessly synched, even if a brief scene during a ride. Flight of Passage was brutal. But I can usually bounce back, so I feel for you there.

I close my eyes on SM during the lift hill lighting (especially if Hyperspace Mtn), and during Hyperspace on Star Tours and MF.

You may have tried already, but have you considered getting the Scopolamine patch? It's by prescription, and can be expensive, so plan ahead. It goes below your ear the night before and lasts for 3-days. You can add a dose of Bonine (or your preferred pill) in the morning as long as no conflicts (ask doctor). The biggest bummer of the patch is dry mouth, but there can be other side effects.

Another "stronger than Dramamine" idea is Gravol. Works wonders for me, but also can knock me out for the first 1-2 hours. Good luck!

I hate the sharp turns on TSM. Does it do those sharp turns around corners? It looks like it might based on the ride videos.

Based on what you wrote, and if IJ is Indiana Jones, you may want to skip ROTR. ROTR is a pretty intense ride, more intense than Star Tours.

I totally understand your point. Time in the parks is short and it isn't worth feeling miserable and sick if you can avoid it. When I do trips theme parks, I skip some of the more intense rides and coasters that my friend wants to ride all the time.

I only rode webslingers once and I was very tired so my memory might be bad, but I do not recall super sharp turns/spins like in TSMM. And if there are, there are fewer.

FWIW I get motion sick with screens (not roller coasters). So, I get quite motion sick on star tours, and a little bit on Smugglers Run and Soarin and TSMM but I did not feel remotely sick after web slingers. Also, there is one part of ROTR that I have to close my eyes on but the rest I’m totally fine with. Hope that helps someone!

Thank you, this helps. Maybe I will give it a shot then if I can get a BP.

WS is basically the same as Midway Mania, including the 3D glasses. The video is considerably more detailed, which could aggravate any motion sickness. However, the movements are not very excessive: you basically just go from room to room, but you may be riding sideways. ROTR is just a dark ride, basically a 21st century version of what you would find in Fantasy Land. The main difference is that you can move back and forth, instead of just a steady forward progression. Neither of these are even remotely as nauseating as the 3D rides at Universal Studios or a motion simulator like Star Tours.

I know you aren't asking for 'cures' but I just want to say that the Scopolamine patch changed my Disney life. I haven't been able to 'test them out' at DL yet, but at WDW I was able to go on FoP (3 times!) MF, ST, & TT. Not brave enough to try them out on SM or RnRC & we didn't get lucky with ROTR, but I was even able to go on Expedition Everest.

I'm looking forward to trying the patch out at DL.

Thanks everyone! I am pleasantly surprised to hear that I might be able to ride both WS and ROTR (if we get BG's). I love TSMM and Soarin'...neither one bothers me. It's spinning around and around and around, or a motion simulator where my mind and body are not experiencing the same thing.

I do take Bonine every day we are at the parks. But I can't handle the patches because they make my mouth too dry. I'm already a huge water drinker and I'm worried about not being able to drink enough water (due to mask requirements) on this trip.

Thanks for all the tips! I'll report back how it went!

WS looks like the ride vehicles and ride system are virtually the same as Toy Story, just with more modern tech than pulling a string and a bit wider, so it depends on how you do there would be my guess.

Rise has a small drop (think Pirates length, but straight down) and the vehicles move fairly quickly and do some back and forth. Keep in mind it is trackless, so you can't really tell where it is going to go all the time. Some you can just from tire marks on the floor.

Also, be cautious with Smugglers Run if Star Tours is an issue, although smugglers run isn't in 3D, so that may help.

I am known as "Miss Motion sickness" and I love Rise. We live near Disney World and I have been on it numerous times. I am not a fan or Flight of Passage either. Had my barf bag ready.

I know it's a bit of spoiler, but I'd recommend watching on ride YouTube videos if you're really concerned.

Web moves slower than ToyStory and not as fast turns/spinning between screens.... However you're much closer to the screen so you may feel a little more 'visual' motion simulation.

Rise basically has a Star Tours type effect at the very end for a few seconds, first a free fall drop and then motion base flying back to land (Tours).

Thanks, this is extremely helpful. Sounds like I can at least give WS a shot.

Bonine (meclizine) is good. We also bring ginger chew candies and if starting to feel queasy, chew away ! works fast and good. For the visual motion things (star tours, etc.) if you start to feel queasy, close your eyes! Good luck !
