Just got an email from Starwood that stated
"in order to ensure that we consistently deliver elite level hotel benefits (upgrades, amenities, etc.), we are limiting their availability to reservations made through Starwood Web sites, hotels, call centres, and your travel agent or corporate booking tool".
This means that for travel from 1/1/04 "Stays will not be eligible for elite level hotel benefits (upgrades, amenities, etc.). " if booked through

Hotels.com
Hotwire.com
Orbitz.com
Priceline.com
Travelocity.com
Travelweb.com
