New plan? Car rental instead of Von's delivery?

We would pay $100 each way for transfer from airport to hotel if we did it this way. So that's $200. With the problems we are having with Von's and not having a US credit card, we are thinking maybe it would be cheaper to just rent a car and get ourselves to and from the airport that way and get our own groceries! Hubby is googling and it seems to be cheaper this way. So anyone have an good rental places they can rave about?

Another option to consider is Lansky's car service. We used them for the first time in Aug based on recommendations from other DISers and they were amazing. Our cost was $160 round trip and that included taking my parents to their hotel and then my family to a different hotel. The price also includes a stop at Target although we didn't need to stop there.

Yes we always do Valet parking at the VGH but really we shouldn't bother as we hardly use our vehicle. Self parking would be just fine.

For our trip next month I went through the Dollar website directly ($98 for the week plus $9 a day parking at the hotel) but previously I have done Priceline and got really good deals - got $79 for a week a couple of years ago at SNA. Priceline only deals with the big car rental chains. If you go directly through a car rental website make sure that they have the cars at the airport and you do not have to take a shuttle to/from the airport. I booked a compact - first time I booked a compact car DH did not think he would like it or that it would be too small for him (he has long legs) but it worked really well for us. Nothing fancy but we just need to/from airport, supermarket run and a day in LA.

Ok Lansky's looks great. Since we don't need a vehicle while we are there - and only need transportation from airport to hotel and return and then groceries - this seems like it could be the best option for us. It's $17 a day to park x 6 days so we'd have to add that to the car rental cost….
