OT: Do you know where the term "Cajun" (does not rhyme with El Cajon) comes from?

In the 1700's the British conquered from the French a section of eastern Canada called Arcadia. Unlike what happened in Quebec a little later, the Arcadians, who spoke French, were removed and transported to other parts of North America notably Louisiana. In the chaos and confusion, children were separated from their parents.

There is a poem, Evangeline, (I forget who wrote it) that was written about this tragedy.

That's good to know. Here are tons more links - pretty much every charitable organization people may have an affiliation with are here. For example, as I'm a Lutheran, I plan to contribute to this organization .

I live between Baton Rouge and New Orleans and sincerely appreciate the outpouring of prayers, good thoughts, and assistance from those on these boards.

Although my home had some damage, I'm one of the lucky ones. Several of my family members have most assuredly lost everything, including my sister from Slidell.

Please continue to keep us in your thoughts and prayers and send help in anyway you can. I can tell you that it is very appreciated. And please don't believe all of the horrible things you have seen on TV. The people of our state are fantastic and have risen above and beyond what is necessary. The TV doesn't show those people and the good they are doing. As a matter of fact, things would be much worse in N.O. and the surrounding area without the hard work of our local residents.

Please also keep the rescuers, electric company employees, police, etc. and anyone involved in the rescue, recovery and clean-up of N.O. in your thoughts and prayers. They need all the strength they can.

Also, please don't forget the residents of Mississippi. Louisiana is receiving all the attention, but some cities there have been wiped off the map.

I'm glad that you are okay and am very sorry to hear about your sister losing everything. I have been glued to the TV and the stories and images are almost surreal. Please know that we are praying for you and all those involved in the rescue and rebuilding efforts.

And please don't believe all of the horrible things you have seen on TV. The people of our state are fantastic and have risen above and beyond what is necessary. The TV doesn't show those people and the good they are doing.

Mostly what we've seen is people coping with horrific loss, hardship and tragedy. We know there are fine people in Louisiana, don't worry about that. Both times I've visited, I've been treated wonderfully by some of the friendliest people anywhere.

We will continue to do what we can up here, I just wish we were close enough to take some of you in. We hope it starts to get easier to get supplies to where they're needed, and things get back to normal sooner than has been predicted.

Hi everyone
I have to say that I am very sad for all the people in the gulf coast that have had to live through this tragedy. I asked my boss if we could fundraise and we will be doing a car wash and BBQ on Sept.17. We will even have the local radio there, local businesses have donated some products for our raffle. We hope to raise about a $1000 dollars minimum.
Anybody in Peterborough come to RONA 11-5pm and have a hot dog and get your car washed and help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Finally got around to making my donation on-line today. As bad as everything has been so far, based on what has been in the media about what they expect to find (i.e., number of casualties) after the water recedes, the worse may be yet to come.
