New "Old" 1973 WDW Home Video

Wow, nice video, thanks for sharing! Loved the clips of the train

That was so neat! We didn't start going to FW until much later and the train was no longer there. When did it go away? Did the buses replace it?

Ahhh, the train. Where to start.....
The train starting operating in late 1973, but officially in early 1974. There were problems from the start. The track was laid incorrectly. The soft Florida soil requires more than what had been done. This lead to several derailments. The engines, although adorable, were too small for the 3 plus mile loop around the campgrounds. The engineer HAD to fill her with water on EVERY trip or the train could literally run out of steam, a very dangerous situation. The water tower was located at what is now the Outpost Bus Depot. That little house just behind the depot is all that is left. (Although, I think you will see the old water tower show up at the new Meadows Pool as part of the slide). Also many of the engineers weren't properly trained in running a real steam engine. The whistle could be heard 3 miles away and since the train started running at 7 am, many campers complained about the noise. I personally loved it!!! Lastly, the train zigged zagged thru the campgrounds running very close to the roads, going right in front of the Meadows Trading Post and right by several sites. Some folks tried to beat the train and this too made for a dangerous situation. A child was hurt right by one of the crossing gates in the late 70's, a minor injury, but close enough to tragedy that it was the final straw for an awesome icon.
For those of us lucky enough to have riden the Fort Wilderness Railroad, it was incredible. Riding through the woods in the fresh air with that whistle blowing, nothing like it. There's so many of us that TRULY MISS THE TRAIN.
I'm doing some research on the train right now and will post what I have found in a couple of weeks. Some very interesting stuff.

Thanks for sharing this link. I would love to have seen the train. I've read some of the websites that show the history of the FW train and the restoration and it's all very cool! The trains at MK are one of my favorite things too. Enjoyed the video. :)

Wow..not to sound corny..but that really was a "magical time". :wizard:
I remember visiting in 1973 and watching the parade down Mains Street. I was 15, and my little sister was 5. Taking her to meet all the characters in the MK..it was a wonderful experience.::yes:: My nicest memory was being on the Ferry boat headed back to the parking area that evening and watching the fireworks going off in the Magic Kingdom. I knew I'd be back.
Again, and again, and again!
Those home movies brought back such wonderful memories.pixiedust:

Thanks for posting the link.:thumbsup2

If you don't already know what happened to the train, you will be depressed when you find it on the internet. I was one of the lucky ones to ride the train and your description pretty much nails it right there. There was nothing like it.

If I had the money and nothing else to do, I would ship the train back here and run it through FW myself with a highly trained staff. I wouldn't charge Disney a dime either. They could just put me in a spot with my RV and we would be cool.

You are right. Definitely a black mark against WDW. Some of the pictures I've found will make one cry. At least there is a happier ending. More to come.

Yes, there is. However, when you find out what Disney did to those trains, you want to strangle people.

That video was great. It brings back alot of old memories. I still have to say I like the Tram shown in that video the best. The feeling of your hair blowing in the wind:)
