Well, after being unemployed and on a fixed income for the last year, (well, all my choice with retirement) I've decided to sort of get back to work. All this sleeping late and going out for breakfast was getting to me. (Actually, honestly, I've been subbing at our kids high school plus the police academy, but I digress) Anyhow, getting back to the point, I have a 2nd interview Monday for a customer service position for ATA airlines. It's a growing US airlines, with frequent daily flights to Orlando, plus East Coast and California from Chicago Midway.
Now, it doesn't pay much, but as you can imagine, the flight benefits are great. And, they have a 'sister' airline at Chicago, Southwest, where you can use your flight benes also.
Now, one of the downsides is that it seems you will be working so much you won't have time to go anywhere and use the benefits.
My other option, which I would really like, is a position at the above mentioned HS. But, while I have a degreee plus, I don't have a teaching certificate. I met with the administrator today who said they'd be very interested in me "with a certificate." That takes about a year or so of classes. Possibly more. So, do I take the airline job and go to school part time, and use the benefits for a year or so, or go full time to school, and not have any real job? I must say, I've always wanted to work at an airport. Really.
What's your opinion?

try the airport job out & see what it's like .

You may love it & never want to do anything else.

and if it's not quite what you want THEN review your situation.

IMHO of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck with what ever you decide

Could you start off at school part time, with the job in the airport. And then if you don't like it, change to full time school?

Either way take the job at the airport to start with - you might not get this chance again!

I used to work for an airline and the benefits are amazing - not just your flights, but also loads of deals on hotels and car hire etc. I have also always wanted ot work at an airport - no idea why, it just seems like a buzzing sort of place to work.

I would give the airport a try myself.

Joe, this is going to come down to what you are really most enthusiastic about - going back to studying takes commitment and you need to be sure that it is an option you want to take.

You need to think which one, if you chose it, may have you regretting you'd taken the other option. Good luck and tell us what you decide to do!

Well, I was offered a job today, starting Feb 9th. I told them I would take it, and after 5 weeks of training, work part time. But what I really want to do is be a lumberjack. No, wait, that's not right. Oh, yes, a high school teacher. So, I figure that I can get my certificate for teaching, which will take 1 1/2 to 2years while working part time, and taking classes during the day. Hopefully I can at least get enough free trips out of this to make it worth while. May make it back to London again this year. IF the exchange rate ever gets better.

Mmm a lumberjack LOL ;)

I think you're doing the right thing Joe it did sound like you really wanted to work for the airline but that your head was saying HS teacher. Your decision means that you're going to get to try both and when you get your teaching certificate you may find that you love your airline job more, however at least you'll have your certificate for the future.

Good luck with the new job and the new training.

Joe,

Sorry I didn't see this earlier.I think you have made the right decision.

Best of luck old chap:p
