We like to go camping for long weekends. We just took a day off and went camping this past weekend with an old friend. During our trip our friend was talking about expanding his horizons and going different places. DH and I were on board with that.

We did a lot of talking and we know lots of places to go as far as general area, but no specific towns. We've got other places in mind as well but for now we've decided next year we'll be looking for a place to go camping on the New Jersey beach. Our reason for choosing the New Jersey beaches - we want go somewhere different but need a place that's within an 8 hour drive so we have time to set out in the morning and still get there with plenty of daylight to get set up and cook dinner. We know of a great campground in Myrtle Beach, SC but that's just too far away for a long weekend.

We have the world in our current favorite beach location and would like to try to match it so here's what we're looking for:

A private or state run campground thats reasonably priced (less than $50/night - the cheaper the better),
Trees for shade
Clean facilities
tent friendly (a must we don't have a camper)
Family friendly -
Easy beach access
and where there are activities such as a boardwalk, mini-golf, etc within easy driving distance.

On the dream list - Our friend has two children 21 & 22 who he likes to take camping with him so in addition we'd like a place that has night life close by; if possible, something they could ride their bikes to so no drunk driving - believe it or not the place we go to in P-town on Cape Cod really does have this.

So does anyone have any suggestions? I'm posting this on the camping board too but since camping is a budget vacation I thought I'd also see if anyone here has any suggestions.

DH was in the navy but only for 4 years. Does that count?

Not sure, check the link for contact information. I have gone there as a guest with my parents (retired military).

We were able to get in with my parents retired military ID.

You may want to post this over on the Camping board...might be more first-hand recommendations there. We're in the Hartford area, so my interest is piqued by your request!
