have two nieces, 12 and 13. Do you think they would like a vera bradley bag for christmas?

They live in northern NJ -- not sure if these were popular for this age group and this area.

if not, any other ideas -- i usually have given them gift cards.

I have a 12 year old girl in South Jersey (near Philly) and she does not. Coach is still a big one for the middle school set here.

LOL, I grew up in Medford and I remember in the mid to late 80's all the girls had Liz Claiborne bags! It cracks me up now when I see a 12 year old carrying a more expensive purse than mine (and better cell phone, iPod, boots...) :rotfl2:

Last year, when DD was 14, she graciously explained to me that the Hipster I bought her in the pink elephant pattern was horrid, and could she PLEASE pick out her own purse.

Can I also add - last year, I purchased a bunch of the zip ID cases and the clip zip Id holders, which essentially became the "gift bag" for the giftcards that we gave our nieces. There had been a REALLY big sale, and they were dc'd patterens, so they were really cheap. (Thanking the DIS - as someone on the boards last year metnioned this idea)

Yes, I do see a lot of the pre- teen/teen girls with them.

I grew up one town to the east of Medford and I remember the Liz Clairborne phase..

We live in central NJ. My DD 13 likes the vera bradley bags and so do
her friends.

Same here. VB is not popular at all by us. Coach seems to be the teenage bag of choice from what I see (and by what my own DD carries).

I live in Central Jersey, and my dd13 isn't into designer...actually she shuns them and thinks the girls in school that flaunt them are silly and spoiled. She goes into a store and buys something she likes by style...not name. :worship::worship::worship:

My 12yo DD hasn't mentioned any specific bags yet, hers is from Target no brand. OP - I think you couldn't go wrong with getting the Vera bags and maybe include a gift receipt just in case they don't like it?? I think it's still nice to open a gift at Christmas.

I live in South Jersey and have 3 DD's. I always thought it was strange that many on this board talked about these bags (Vera Bradley) as they are NOT popular around here.

I'm far from NJ, but VB is not popular at all here. The girls pretty much think the patterns are horrid. Just to make sure I went to the website and just called DD in the room to take a look and see if there was anything she liked (she's 13). She said she wouldn't be caught dead carrying around any of those purses.

Interesting how different areas of the country have different tastes.

My almost 13 yr.old carries a Vera lunch box to school everyday. Most of her friends carry one also. She BEGGED to get one. I guess it is just the area.

I;m in North NJ. Bergen County to be specific and the girls here do carry them. My daughter has no interest with them but most of her friends like the quilted look.

We're in Somerset County and it seems like every.single.girl at DS's middle school has a VB backpack AND lunchbag, and a lot of them have little make-up cases and cell phone holders as well.

Am I the only adult that thinks they look like "old lady" bags??? :lmao:

Me too! In fact, I do my daily walk near my local high school and I hear the girls call them old lady bags all the time. Most of them seem to have Coach wristlets.

I am also in Bergen County and when I showed one to my DD13 and said "isn't it a cute bag", she looked at me, rolled her eyes and said "ewww...no!". I haven't seen any of the girls around here with one. My DD buys what she likes and doesn't worry about the brand name.

I'm near Philly and was at a Middle school Football Game last week. I noticed all of the cheerleaders bags were lined up by the fence and there were 4 -5 VB bags and the rest were other types of totes, probably Coach or something like that (I couldn't tell) and very few back packs. I was thinking how much someone paid for the bags and they were on the ground, and it started raining!
also EVERY girl was wearing some type of Uggs. I am so not ready for my girls to grow up!
